Default ID of S&W box from 1949

I purchase this K22 from local Shop today. The main reason it caught My eye was the box. Box is dark blue, with S&W logo on top and seems to be of a hard plastic material. It is molded for a K frame 6". Has a blue satin type material lining the case Has the cleaning kit in a rectangle clear plastic tube, and the case has a section molded for the tube. It has the black knurlled screwdriver. I received the original invoice where the K22 was purchased on 3-29-49, and it lists a plastic case with the gun. I have never seen one of these boxes, and any info will be appreciated

The brownish spots on outside of box are areas where the blue finish is missing.

Nice find. I have heard it said that these cases were for salesmen to carry their samples in. Hopefully someone else will have the answer. Bob

There is a process whereby you can reline the interior of these cases. DonJer Products Corp. sells an undercoat adhesive in several colors that is applied to the inside of the case. While still wet IIRC you then sprinkle on the suede tex material in a matching color.

I relinned a wood pistol case that I found at a LGS by applying several layers of the stuff. I waited for the first coat to dry, added more adhesive and then sprinkled on more of the suede material. After several layers, the linning looked like felt.

I can't recall where I purchased the material but an internet search should turn up a source. The can of adhesive says that the company is from Winnebago, IL. (I may have gotten it from Rockler but that is just a WAG)

The outside of the case can be spray painted if I remember correctly. Buy a can of automotive spray paint that is a close match or if you have a friend in an auto body shop, they can probably mix you up a batch.

Obviously, the above is only important if you plan to restore the case. Otherwise, nevermind.....

Thanks for info. I could not recall ever seeing one of these boxes, and have prowled a lot of gunshops and shows. I think will leave it "as is", with the K22. Makes a nice group, especially with original sales slip, dated March of 1949. The revolver cost $52.87, and the box was $4.00 extra. Thanks again for the information.

Wow - I was born on 3/27/1949 so your gun is only two days off. Would you mind sharing the serial number with me (PM if you prefer) As I search for a 1949 K22 I'm keeping a list of serial numbers that shipped in that time frame to help narrow my search!

Much appreciated,
