S&W 38. Age and Value unknown?
My father recently passed and left a seemingly old S&W 38. to me. My father once said it was passed on to him by his father and I am having no lucking locating the date of the revolver. The serial number is 554749 and it seems to have a 4" barrel. I was hoping for some help on this.

Welcome! We need more information for an ID. Top break or swing-out cylinder, five or six shot cylinder, and a description of any factory frame and barrel stampings would be a good start.

It is likely a .38 Military & Police from the mid-1920s. It became the model 10 in 1957.
Are you able to post a photo, and is there a family history associated with it?

Yes, it is a standard 4" .38 M & P, definitely pre-WW II. Others here keep closer track of serial numbers and can probably get you closer to the year (and possibly month) the gun shipped from the factory.
S & W has always used their ship or sales date rather than production, but this was a very popular model and it probably didn't sit on their shelf long before being sold. Enjoy!

Thank You
Thank you once again for the time taken to respond so quickly. I hope I can find an exact year for it and am grateful that I have some idea now as to how old it may be.

If you provide the serial number (on the butt of the revolver), we can give you a closer estimate of its age. If you are uncomfortable showing the whole number, you can replace the last two digits with X's.
Welcome to the forum.

Serial is in first post.
Around 1926 give or take. Gun looks pretty good. The plastic "stag" grips were popular in the 1950s.
