Here are pictures of the 1917 Target I picked up.The Gun was converted in 1939 by the Factory,I have some paperwork I will post photos of later that are pretty interesting. The Gun still retains the "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamp under the barrel as well as all the US Inspector stampings. The Gun was sent back for Patridge Target Sights,Grooved Trigger and a reblue in bright blue.Another very interesting feature is the serrated top strap which is way ahead of its time in 1939.The workmanship installing the front and rear sights is unbeleveiable,It looks as good if not better that my 1935 Outdoorsman I posted pictures of.I think the stocks where also changed from the usual bland smooth walnuts with no medallions to this beautiful set of pre war service stocks. This has quickly become one of my favorite Guns in the 24hrs that I have had it,Enjoy the photos!

Very Nice, ALEX

I always wanted to see a pic of the revolver they talk about in the SCSW...Super neat...Im glad you got it...

Cant wait to see the letter and docs you speak about...

Great Find

Thanks Jim and Kris,The GA was not included and is one of the Reproductions. The repro GA is every bit as nice as the original and actually fits better,There is no overhang on the bottom like the originals have.I will dig the paperwork out and take some pictures of it later.

EDIT: forgot to mention that the person who I purchased the Gun from bought it from the owner who sent it in for the target work. The original owner had held onto the the Gun all these years and had to sell it as he was moving to a Nursing home that did not allow Guns. The Gun had stayed near Hutchinson Kansas for almost 75yrs....Until now :)

Here are the documents,There is another one that I have that is confusing. It shows the owner paid the $6.80 for the reblue and the trigger but not the $10 for the sights. If the sights where installed later the Gun would have been refinished again after the sight work and there is no sign of this.I am thinking the factory cut him a deal or he called in and had them add the target sights after he had sent the Gun in.Yet another S&W mystery:eek:

Very nice,
You will have to let us know if it shoots as good as it looks !

Lawd have mercy that's purty.

That's a spectacular gun. Thanks for sharing.

Alex,

That is a beautiful 1917 with an unusual configuration. Nice find!

Regards

Yes,It says $10.00 for the sights. There is another piece of paper that shows he paid $6.80.Due to the quality of the work and the fact the gun would have to be refinished again the factory had to have installed the sights at the same time. The Gun has obviously been refinished only once at the factory and the bluing on the top strap and the sight itself match perfectly.

That's the neatest 1917 I've seen. It's also great that you have the background story and copies of the documents. More proof the the S&WHF does an outstanding job and is worth supporting.
Imagine being only the third owner of a gun almost 100 years old! What an outstanding find :)

This is one of those guns that no comment can match.

Thank you for your fine pictures, they radiate quality from another time.

Beautiful

Thanks for the comments everyone,When I first saw the Gun I knew it was once in a lifetime chance.I have not shot it yet but someone(S&W) has worked the single action pull over on this Gun.The trigger pull is scary light but there is no push off so it was done correctly.
