Military and Police Special help?!?
I just acquired a Military and Police Special in 38 special. Full history paperwork and everything, it is ca. 1917. It lettered with Checkered Walnut Grips with Gold Medallion. It now has newer grips as it was redone at S&W factory sometime after '67 according to the letter. I am at a loss when researching these grips, can anyone show me a picture of these correct grips to help me find what I am looking for? I really appreciate any help offered.
Thanks,
Mike

Thank you Mike! Do these have any sort of name in particular? Any sources anyone knows of? Having a tough time knowing what to call them for searches.

I don't know of an exact name, but many call them gold medallion or deep dish medallion service grips. You can sometimes find a pair on eBay, but they won't be cheap.

Thank you DWalt, I figured they wouldn't be cheap, but I didn't even know which ones to look for to even get a price range. I will keep a watch out, thank you all!
How harsh do you think the refinish at the factory harms the old girls value?

Even a factory refinish has a negative effect on value. If S&W did it, there should be some factory stampings indicating that. However, these M&Ps are common, and even one in very good original condition wouldn't bring a great deal more than $500-$600.

The letter indicates it was by S & W, and is indicated by factory diamond shaped stamp on gun. I am happy with the trade for it even at that price, and it letters as having been sold new local to me, so the history means a lot to me with any gun more so than actual price value. Thanks again for all of your help! Not new to antique firearms, but I am new to S&W, so I am loving learning all this new stuff to me!

Wow, Mike. The pre-1911 stocks on that upper revolver are absolutely gorgeous! I haven't seen many from that era in that good of condition. Very nice looking target model. A 4" target, at that!

You are right - KB recheckered them! They were worn practically smooth.
Dave Chicoine Jr refinished the gun.
Jack
Both of these guns are in the 32-20 serial number series. The upper one is a 32-20,
and the lower one is one of a sequential pair in 32 long. The wood on the 32-20 is
original, of course - it really came to life when KB got all the old oil, etc, out of the
wood.
Regards, Mike

Ah! So this is the .32-20 4" target we were discussing a week or so ago. Very nice looking piece - nice restoration work! Young Dave did you a good job. And, of course, KB does marvelous work, evidenced here once again.
Your .32 Winchester looks a lot better than my early 5" target model. I doubt it shoots any better, though. Mine is amazing. These are wonderful revolvers.

1921 Style
Just for info and more gun porn.
Here is the style that I believe is correct for the 1921 4th change models. Granpa's Gun. 01/1921 ship.
Welcome to your new addiction...

The gun is 1917, not 1921.
