My new VICTORY
Hi, all.
I'm another newbie with a recent acquisition. My new baby is a bit rough but all numbers on butt, barrel, cylinder and grip match. Action is reasonably tight. Blue(?) finish is thin and has steelwool marks on the barrel.
Here are the goods...
●Serial number V400355
●5 inch barrel marked '.38 S&W Ctg' and' SMITH & WESSON', along with patent info on top
●US PROPERTY GHB on top strap
●'Birthdate' believed to be Sept/Oct 1943, as best I can deduce from forum info
●Import marked 'VAM Dist Co LLC, Wooster OH'
Anything available regarding the wheres and whens of it's life would be appreciated.
Thanks, Lee

Welcome! This is a British .38/200 Service Revolver. Nearly all of these went to Great Britain and smaller numbers to Commonwealth nations during WW II. Rarely these will be stamped with military unit markings that may provide a clue as to its history, but a factory history letter will likely be unrevealing as to exactly where it was issued or used.
Here are 1,190 threads with more information . Enjoy!

September 1943 should be correct. I am not familiar with VAM Dist Co LLC, Wooster OH, but there were many importers. It doesn't appear yours has any of the postwar British proof markings. Have you checked to see if .38 Special ammunition can be completely chambered?
"US PROPERTY GHB on top strap" It is actually GHD, for (Col) Guy H. Drewry.

Hi, all.
Thanks for the input and confirmation of what I had found. Re: GHB = GHD...
that's what happens when you rely on aging memory instead of actually looking at it! Oh well. Thanks for making sure I had it right. Have tried .38 Spl... only fits about half way and sloppy, so, pretty sure chambers are original as well. Dropped in some .38 S&W and they fit just fine. Next task... accessorize! Ordered a khaki holster and lanyard... may not be correct, but looks good together.
Thanks again for the replies, this makes me feel my searches were not in vain.

Hi, all.
Thought I'd throw a quick pic atcha. Granted this may not be accurate, but for my humble collection, it suits the need.
