Default U.S. Handguns of World War II

Charlie Pate is the author of U.S. Handguns of World War II and is a S&WCA member. His book is incredibly well researched and is essential for any U.S. military handgun collector. It is especially valuable for those interested in the Victory Model and M1917 revolvers. The good news is that it is back in print and may be purchased from Mowbray Publications.

That is one of my favorite books - it is full of great information and photos. One of the rare books that is both entertaining and highly detailed.

Good to see this back in print! Lots of guys don't have a copy and it has been difficult to find at anywhere near a reasonable price.

Two of my favorite topics, WWII and handguns. Sounds like I'll definitely have to get my hands on a copy. Thanks for the heads up!

Are there TWO books? I have U.S. Handguns of World War II - The Secondary Pistols and Revolvers. It's a good read. Mowbray's site shows only this book, which covers just the secondary guns.

It's only one book. The book is commonly referred to as the " US Handguns of WW2', however the full title includes the "Secondary Pistols & Revolvers." Copies were bringing $100 and up so I can see why Mowbray decided to do another run. Charlie told me last year that he had kept a few extra copies from the first run, but had sold them all and wished he had held back more when the prices went north of the C note! Ed.

I can highly recommend it.

I got it mostly due to my interest in the Victory model and the Colt Commando, and it's well worth the money just for those chapters, but reading about all the intricacies of the procurement process and the decisions and agencies involved has also been an education.

I got my copy early last week and am already annoying people in other threads with my know-it-all attitude, mostly gleaned from this book .

I purchased a copy some years ago. It's an invaluable reference for
those handguns not covered elsewhere, especially the revolvers. This
fills a gap that the many books on the 1911 series don't cover.

Highly recommended for you library!

I had given my copy to a great local friend of mine. I was very happy to see it back in print as I was missing mine as soon as I gave it away. So, I ordered a new one and already have it in hand. Now, if they could do the same hocus-pocus presto-chango on the Clawson 1911 books! I'm unsure of so many things in this life, but I'm rock-solid sure I will NOT be paying $900 for a book..any book!
You will NOT regret obtaining Pate's book, trust me.

Roger

By "secondary" does mean all things NOT what we all now refer to as the 1911, or is that covered, too?

Maybe this will help you-
U.S. HANDGUNS OF WORLD WAR II: The Secondary Pistols and Revolvers
Charles W. Pate
This book covers all of the pistols used by United States forces except the M1911; this includes Smith & Wesson "Victory" Models, High Standard .22s, H&R revolvers, Iver Johnson revolvers, and a wide variety of Colts, such as the Official Police, Commandos, Detective Specials, Pocket Automatics, the Service Model ACE, Woodsman Match Targets, .38 Super Automatics and much, much more. Also included is an incredibly detailed historical section dealing with the procurement and distribution of all of these pistols. The amount of archival research behind this book is staggering. Includes extensive, previously unpublished serial number lists.

BACK IN PRINT!!!

No. But the point of this book and the many illustrations is information and reference, not appreciation, and for its intended purpose the b/w pictures and historical photos are very useful, so I don't think you'll find the absence of color to be a drawback.

It is a must have for S&W guys.
Have a 1917 with Brit proofs? Want to know why?
Have an 1899 or 1902 with Brit proofs? Read the book.
