Based on what I've learned about the history of police firearms training, seeing an officer practicing a two-handed grip in 1950 seems pretty progressive for the times.

My first thought, when I saw the title, was "sitting in a chair". Really progressive training, kinda like shooting from the seat of the prowl car.

Then I saw the picture. First thought then was Colt Police Positive Special. The gun just looks so small in his hands.

But it has that locking thingy in front of the ejector rod. Must be a Smith, not a Colt.

So either that guy is REALLY REALLY big, shooting an M&P, or he's normal size shooting a 32 HE.

Man, January in Ann Arbor ... where is all the snow?

I guess Global Warming reared its ugly head even back then!

Interesting photo! Thanks for posting. Did it by any chance identify the officer?

I live about 35 miles from Ann Arbor - still is the "people's republic". Nice place to visit, but . . .

Photo was taken a year or so before I was born. Looking at the officer . . I'd be guessing but wonder if he was WWII vet . . . I imagine he "is part of history" by now. The photo sort of shocked me a little as he looks a lot like my father-in-law did at that time in photos.

I think the gun is a squiggle hammer (Speed hammer) M&P with four-inch bbl. and that holster looks like the Heiser used by the FBI. I think this man had been trained by the Bureau or was reading their info.

He looks quite professional for the times, and that pose and gun would still be very lethal today, especially with improved.38 ammo.
