Can someone date my little J-frame?
I picked up a decent little Smith snubby today, flat latch, blued, with serial number 123792.
Would one of you please give me an approximate date on this one?
Thanks,
Bob

I have to be a detective since there's 4 possible J frames. Different caliber J frames are in different serial # ranges.
It can't be a .32 Long or a .38 S&W with that # and a flat latch.
So it's either a .22/32 Kit Gun from late 1966, but it would be stamped Mod 34-1.
But since you didn't indicate a model # from the yoke, and if it doesn't have one, that only leaves a .38 Special Chiefs Special from late 1957 not yet stamped Mod 36.
That's the best we can do with the information given. Hope that helps.

Sorry, I rarely think of a J-Frame as anything but a 38 Special. Which, of course, is what my new one is.
Let me make sure I understand this.
It is a Model 36 from 1957, but not marked as a Model 36?

No, it's officially a ".38 Chiefs Special", not considered a Mod 36 until stamped as such. Virtually the same gun but known as a 'Pre Model', (Pre Model 36 in your case) by collectors to distinguish it from the model stamped version.
