i am in need of a hammer for a 22/32 kit gun.as i am not a gunsmith,i do not know if the 22/32 is a i frame or k frame. The gun was made in 1955 and somebody bobbed it years ago.i would like to make gun back to original condition.so i have a questionand a wtb.Is the 22/32 a i frame gun,and wtb any used hammer target or combat for the 22 gun.this gun was made in 1955.thank you

Welcome! The .22/32 Kit Gun of 1955 manufacture would have been an Improved I frame (member Hondo44 is the local expert here and will confirm this), but I think the hammer and trigger would be interchangeable with a J frame. If so, one should be fairly easy to find - you will need a .240" wide spur, not the .375" Target version, to match. The hammer will have a flat face as the rimfire revolvers have the in-frame firing pin, and a replacement will need a gunsmith to install.

A photo of the gun with a close-up of the hammer would help here. Hope this is helpful.

I believe, but am not positive, that the only hammer that will work is from another kit gun or a .22/32 HFT built on the improved I frame. Earlier I frame hammers won't work because they are made for the flat hammer spring. I am not familiar enough to say whether the Improved I frame and J frame hammers will interchange.

Welcome to the forum.

It would really be helpful to have the serial # from the bottom of grip frame to be sure of when it was produced and what you have.

But there were no .22/32 Kit Guns made on the Improved I frame, so it's most likely a Model of 1953 New I frame.

New I frame and J frame 22/32 Kit Gun hammers are the same and will interchange. The I frame was replaced by the J frame in Oct 196O.

NOTE: hammers were changed from the ball/socket spring stirrup junction in c. 1962 thru 1991 to the fork/pin junction.

So to use a post 1962 J hammer the forked ‘Mainspring stirrup’ will also be needed. It looks like this (w/o spring & retainer):

I need a hammer for a 22/32 as well, but mine is an earlier one, pre war. The spur looks like it was broken and then filed off crudely. Any suggestions Hondo44?

You can use any Kit Gun rim fire hammer (flat face) up to 1953 w/o modification. They all used the leaf mainspring.

The 22/32 I frame hammer of course is a rim fire hammer with the firing pin mounted in the frame, and very hard to find. However, the lock work is identical to a .32 and .38 S&W I frame Hand Ejector 3rd Model all the way up to 1953. They were made in much greater numbers than the 22/32 Heavy Frame Target and Kit Gun. So the hammers are much easier to find: on this forum in the classifieds section, e-bay and Gunbroker.

Although these have hammer mounted firing pins, they make excellent permanent or temporary replacements by grinding off the firing pin (which leaves a piece to fill the slot) or punching out the firing pin rivet to remove and use as is. In addition, after grinding or removing the firing pin, grind the small face of the hammer slightly to match the angle of your original RF hammer.

They will work perfectly in the rim fire gun. It will have the rivet hole in the side that can be left as is or filled with a solid pin, and hardly show. It'll have a proper length spur for cocking and shooting.

Or:
The spur of a center fire hammer can be easily transplanted and tig welded to yours.

Or:
One other thought, if you find the same model as yours that's a real cheap clunker but with a good hammer, you could swap hammers and resell the clunker with your hammer or a centerfire replacement hammer.

That's the 1962 and up vintage with the pin for the forked stirrup. So a forked stirrup is also needed.

Stirrup for hammer above, early round shaft style, $6.40: Mainspring Stirrup Gun Parts | 312100A | Numrich Gun Parts
Stirrup for hammer above, later flat style, $4.75: Mainspring Stirrup, Stainless (Flat) Gun Parts | 1087960 | Numrich Gun Parts
