Default Does this mean I did not overpay a lot for my 5" pre-27?

For my 60th Birthday last December I treated myself to a 5" pre-27 with matching grips. Hit the "Buy-It-Now" for about $1,550.
I assumed I probably paid $100-$300 too much but I did not care. Wanted a 5" matching grip pre-27, New Jersey permits to purchase a handgun expire quickly (you do not want to know) and it was my 60th.

Today I saw on the for sale sub-forum that a 5" 27-2 with grips that might not be matching sold in half a day for $1,000.

SOLD: S&W 27-2, 5 inch, 357 Magnum S-prefix-006-jpg

Makes me think that maybe I might not have overpaid.

Thoughts on the market?

You never pay too much. You may buy too early.

Unfortunately for some, that dictum might not ring true for standard grade American Side-By-Side shotguns. Lots of talk on the Forums about the big hit in the market for SXS's

I like that pre-27! I have never overpaid for anything that I have bought. Now, that doesn't mean that I might not have bought it too soon. If you are treating yourself, then it doesn't really matter what the cost was? If you are all right with what you paid, then it will never really matter. Don't try to justify it by the prices that are out there be happy with what you paid and do not look back.

Forget everything that I just said if you're going to try to sell what you buy.

I guess for me you never pay too much for anything if you have the cash to buy what you want when you want it. Now, if you did not have the cash and you had to beg, borrow, steal, or buy on credit then you might have to consider that maybe you are paying too much for something. And as long as all your other financial obligations are met and you have the disposable income, buy at any price what you want. That is a fine looking gun.

I agree with all of the above.
I do, however, like to check the pulse every so often of the market price for the guns I like.

The same revolver,in the original box with all the tools including a $100 screwdriver just hit $1527 on Gunbroker. Four days left in the auction. I'm watching because I've got the same gun, one of my favorites!

To me, the early 27's were the top of the line for S&W. The fit and finish was as good as it gets! The 5" seems to have the best balance of all, so I think you gave yourself a gift you can enjoy when you're 80.

Anyone that's never overpaid for a gun they really wanted probably regretted it....

I saw that gun as well, and to me it was under valued. A 5 inch especially, IMO.

You never know if you overpaid for a gun until you try to sell it.

They are not making any more pre-27's so you have that going for you. Beautiful revolver.

That is a great price for a 5" Pre 27 like yours. Nice gun! Don't compare yours to a 27-2 price-wise in shooting condition. Plus, yours is a five screw with the correct grips. Great price.

I guess I did okay. Bought this 5" 27-2 last year for $450 OTD. It included the original box, although the box isn't in as good condition as the revolver itself. I have no complaints!

I sold twenty three S&W's in the recent RIA auction including a 5" Pre 27 with a box (lot 554). It sold for $2750 plus buyer's premium, total $3162.50. On that basis you didn't pay too much.

Have you been watching auction results? Pre-27's in really nice condition going over $2000 frequently. Holding their own against Pythons.

Last year on the local Armslist (which is viewed religiously every morning) up popped a 5" Pre-27 with an asking of $1300. I called the gent at 7AM and the deal was done by noon. I did not quibble about the price, and he told me he was only selling it because he had a line on a registered magnum and needed the difference. Personally, I would have bought it at $1600 if he asked that. I wanted it, it was available and in a condition that matched the price. Couldn't ask for more. It will become your favorite Smith, it has mine.

If you look at the S&W stamp on the side plate you'll see the raised edges where it curled the metal a little when stamped. That's a good sign of an original finish.

To the OP, you did fine. Five years from now it'll be a steal at that price.

Do you still have the M-27 that you've posted before? When was it made?

I've had both five-inch and six-inch M-27's and pre-27's and find the six-inch easier to shoot really well

Geez you guys......stop now....drool is ruining my keyboard.

Me?............I'm stuck with my Model 28-2, flatter finish...shorter tube, no box, no docs, nutin but fun shootin.

Kinda like being stuck with Barbies little sister....you know the one with glasses, nerdy duds, but usually tries to hang out with the cool crowd (like your 27 and the others posted here).

Anyway..........I love the 28 anyway.

I too had to bow out of the 27 market for now because of the prices. No way I can sneak over or even a thousand past my wife. Found a nice 28-2 4 inch to scratch the itch for now. One day I am going to find the right one though!

I bought a three and a half inch pre-27 with box, matching stocks, and tools a while back as a birthday gift for myself. Cost me $1,195.00, plus tax. I was happy too pay that price. I think if you get what you want, you never really pay too much. "Going prices" are just some folks opinions, and you know what they say about opinions

I bought a couple of the long barrel pre 27s this month, and thankfully a forum member encouraged me on the purchase of my 2nd pre 27. They are very special guns that are becoming less available, and it's nice to have something with some history, beauty, and are great shooters on top of that.

Now, when I reflected on hedging, thinking I may be paying too much, I realize how grateful I am to have such a legendary revolver. You can trust you will not loose on buying your legend, and relish your sound judgement to strike while the iron is hot!

Enjoy that beauty!

You work all of your life or most of it so my attitude is that I have earned whatever it is I buy unless it means taking food off the table or not having rent or mortgage money.

If we can't enjoy our toys (even if they cost a few extra dollars) then what is the sense of doing any of this.

What a killer deal.
It was a "killer deal." But I have a 30 year history with this particular dealer, having been friends with him before he bought the store.

On the day in question, I had already purchased from him a very nice nickel Kit Gun for the going rate. Then he pulls this Model 27-2 from under the counter and says "I've been saving this one for you." I looked it over and he tells me what he would sell it to me for. I looked at him and said, "It's a deal!" I definitely went home happy that day.

Kinda like being stuck with Barbies little sister....you know the one with glasses, nerdy duds, but usually tries to hang out with the cool crowd (like your 27 and the others posted here).

Anyway..........I love the 28 anyway.
Charlie,
I have a Model 27 3 1/2" and three Model 28's, a 6" and two 4".
If forced to give up all but one? Four inch 28!

Kinda like me, plain, ain't never gonna be good lookin', sociable but all business when I need to be.

If you did overpay, it was not by much. I doubt I will ever be able to justify a 5" M27 for myself. However, living in Jersey is a problem you need to fix quickly.

If you WILLINGLY paid their asking price, then you did not overpay, because it was worth that much to YOU. What someone else might or might not want to pay for it is irrelevant.

I bought my 5" pre-27 last July for $1300. It is the virtual twin of yours EXCEPT it had the wrong grips on it when I bought it. I then bought a pair of period correct magnas from a forum member for $140. So I have $1440 in mine and don't have grips numbered to the gun. By my estimation, you did very well!
