Default 317 did I overpay???

Did I over pay for yet another gun? Just won an auction for a 317-1 w/ 2" ss barell, red ramp fr sight, adj rear sight. It cost me $430 plus tax. No shipping or FFL transfer because he's local to me.

No, you did not overpay. I've seen pre lock 317s go over $500 and new production are more than that.

The .22 never goes out of favor and you will be glad you bought it when ammo prices continue to rise.

I'd call it fair market value - maybe even a little below when all said and done.

Come on up to NH and let me get a better look at it.

I can't believe I said in the OP I paid $430. Wishful thinking maybe? The actual price was $643-. So I did over pay a little then huh. They're always a bit more $$ in Massachusetts too.
Any idea how many of these were made?

Aren't they still in production?

Internal lock or without? What's the "dash number"? Is it a 317 (no dash), 317-1, etc? ....open the cylinder and it'll be on the inner frame where the crane locks in.

Yes, they are still in production.

I saw the gun you bought. At that price, I think you paid top dollar but that's what it took to win the auction so it was a market price (as opposed to a ridiculously high opening bid set by the seller) and for that reason, you dit not pay too much.

It is pre lock and comes like new in the box. As you said, MA is the eastern California (okay I said that) and prices are higher.

Bottom line is that you seem happy to have the gun and just need a little reassurance to be confident of your purchase.

Here it is: As far as a money maker - no; however, it sold once for over 6 bills so if you take care of it, you can get your money back if you need to.

Second, it's a .22 so it will pay foritself in ammo cost rather quickly if you exercise the trigger.

Congratulations, you did just fine!

...and the offer stands; next time you're going to be up my way, shoot me a PM and we can burn some powder.

A.

I was watching that gun also. Very nice! I already have two 317s, and couldn't convince myself I needed a 3rd. I would have loved to have that one with the adjustable sights! That is a rare piece! Good luck, and enjoy!
I am still on the lookout for a 3" adjustable sight 317.

I missed the adjustable sights. This is a horse of a different color.

According to the SCSW 3rd, your gun was a special run made in 2000 and appears to be stock. 120 made - more scarce than my 625-7 (150).

I don't know how this affects value as the correlation between value and rarity can be tricky with newer guns, but it certainly does not detract.

VERY nice pick up!

A.

it's been said on this forum many times, you never overpay for a S&W ... sometimes you just pay early, before the market pricing catches up.

I love my 317 ... been point shooting with it as of late. Hugely cost effective, and the exact size of a larger caliber J-frame snub, so it's a great practice stand-in for 36s, 37s, 60s, etc. At the range it enjoys a steady diet of Wally World 550 blaster packs. A quick brushing afterward and it's ready to eat more.

NEVER let the cost of a tank-of-gas nowadays come between you and the gun you really want. The person that calls you a fool and says you paid too much....usually don't have one like it anyway.

It's not like you can rent one when you want to. If you enjoy it, then it is worth it.

We don't "spend" money on guns, it is an investment. You'll save a fortune on ammo with it too.

Don't worry, be happy.

The general consensous in this thread (and I agree) is don't let a few dollars come between you and a gun you want if you can afford it.
To me the purchase price seems on the high side at this time but unless the bottom completely falls out it may not be this time next year. Plus if you want it and will enjoy it, what difference does it make?
My 317 is an adjustable sight 3" pre-lock MIM model with box and accessories and appears to be fired very little. It came from the original purchaser's estate along with the factory rubber grips as well as some factory bananas. I paid $500 about a year ago and felt it was a fair price but appears to may have appreciated in only 1 year.
The box, etc is nice but since I'm not a typical collector, doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I am a collector of shooters, not safe queens (can't afford it).
Don't worry about it. Enjoy your new purchase by shooting it and in a short time when the price of them has escalated, you'll smile even more.

That question should be asked prospectively - i.e., "Will I overpay?"

Here's my take - any time I buy a gun from a retailer I am overypaying, because I can get the same gun locally in a private sale in just as good condition if I am patient.

I've purchased a fair number of my guns from LGS's, by the way.

As long as you are happy with your purchase, just the the price tag disappear in the rear view mirror.

Used in my LGS in MA, $549.95
Seems as though you may have not done badly at all.

So you're the one! Well, I was in it until got to $517.23. Glad a forum member got it. I think I'm the one who started it. I opened the bidding but upon closer inspection, it looked like someone had taken a 317-1 and had a 1 7/8 barrel put on it. I e mailed the seller to ask if it was a frankengun or did it come from the factory that way. In return he did a little research, posted what he knew and put pictures of the box on the web indicating it was a pretty rare collectable and the bidding took off. Egro I shot myself in the foot
Again-at least a forum member got it.

Then you got a deal! Especially if you can drive down and get it and save the shipping and FFL fees. I really wanted that little thing but I would have been in it for close to $750 after transfer fees and shipping.
