Here, finally, is a project I've been working on for a while.

Here are some of my Chiefs Specials and a study of the flat latch cylinder releases from the 1950s and '60s.

Hope you find this interesting. It's been a bit of fun to build.

Slàinte mhòr,

Bob

FWIW, I have a real Chief's chief special in my collection with box, holster and badge. It is a worn workhorse but one that I am very glad to have. Serial number is 20768 shipped 10/14/1952, I also own 12433 shipped in August of 1952. 693795 a 3" shipped September 1968. J 9902 shipped February 1969.

I also have 8J7700 shipping date unknown and a pre 37 serial number 28530 shipped September 1953.

I have a .38 Chiefs Special Model 36 factory stamped MASS. STATE POLICE. It was owned by Massachusetts State Police officer Milton Walsh. He later worked for Smith & Wesson as a factory rep in Law Enforcement
.He was featured in the S&W Model 58 ad. I also have his Mass State Police wallet badge, his MSP shoulder patch and his S&W gold bullion jacket patch and S&W ID. Added the picture

... I like the one that's in for a facelift. The wear make me wonder where it's been and who it's known.

That little Baby, reportedly, belonged to a Montgomery, Alabama, LEO. It's # 11920, smooth ramp front sight, non-matching stocks. If it were only for the visible wear I wouldn't have sent it in for a redo. There was lots of play in the cylinder (nearly to the point I didn't feel comfortable shooting it), and the action was horrible. So it appears to be one of those that was carried -- and shot -- a lot.

Wow, nice bunch. I'm on the lookout for a LEO Chiefs with the provenance yours has -- allusive critters in my neck of the woods.

Does your 28530 have the aluminum cylinder? I should think it's in the right range (unless it's been swapped out at the factory already).

I've seen one like yours but without all the fantastic supporting gear. Wonderful collection!

I only have one.....

...and it's not very pretty, but I love it all the same.:)

When I read this the other day my memory told me you were not telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Took me a wee while to find this one:

I picked up this little guy a few weeks ago. Class B engraved by Tom Freyburger (I found his mark under the cylinder release). In all my collecting of engraved S&Ws, I think that this is the first engraved J Frame that has made its way to my collection - very happy for it to have come to the AZ to live with me.:)

Not sure where you were going with this but I don't think these are referring to the same gun.....
