Airweight 38 SPL CTG
Hello. I just joined today. I have been given a 38 special revolver and I’m wondering about the manufacture date. There is no model number on the yoke. I have attached three photos. Thanks

Congratulations!
You have the finest pocket pistol ever made, in my opinion.
It’s a pre-model number (made before about 1958) gun: what would become the Model 38 once model numbers began to be assigned. It’s one of the original and real Bodyguards, unlike the Tupperware guns Smith introduced more recently with that name.
Someone will be along with a more precise date.
Enjoy your revolver: it’s a great one!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Looks like it shipped in 1956 or 57.

Welcome!
As stated above, your gun was made before the model numbers came about. I do dissent, however, on the notion of being the best concealed carry gun ever....that would be the Centennial (of just about any flavor).
Again, welcome

Wouldn't be an airweight, would it?

Given the difference in finish between frame and cylinder, barrel - I'd say 100% it's an Airweight. AW became the Model 38 and all steel became the 49.

Throw in a vintage Tyler T grip adapter and a Lewis LA holster and you are ready to go to town with that old school S&W. Great find great gun.

Thanks for all the replys. The photos didn't post the way I intended. It is an airweight, although I do not know what that means. It is on the right side of the barrel. Thanks again.

It means the frame is made from an aluminum alloy to make the gun lighter in weight. The barrel and cylinder are steel, although some of the early examples also had an aluminum alloy cylinder. That did not work out well.
