Wondering about the age of the box. Inside of the box has a date of April 15, 1955. Think that is when they started printing that warranty statement.
My guess is from the pre-19 era, maybe 1955-1957.
Thanks for the help.

Yes. Those years are about right, maybe a year or so earlier. This is what we often call the blue/black box. It didn't last long. I have one that shipped in 1956, and my January, 1957 box is the "brighter" blue version. Yours seems to be in pretty decent shape.

Also, you are correct about the date inside.

Added: I'd have to open the safe to check, but I think my November, 1956 box is also the brighter blue.

Wow

How crazy is that? Just heard from a guy that owns the gun that goes with my box. (unless I read the number wrong)
Going to send the box down to Alabam for him to take a look.
Will keep you posted.
I'm sure this happens from time to time, but would bet it is fairly rare.

I think I'd rather he sent the gun over to me...You know just for verification...It shouldn't take more than a couple of decades since I'm slow...

At the last gun show, I was pre-informed that a lot of boxes would be available from a particular collection...The guy who had first refusal had bought many unboxed guns from this particular collector and wanted to make sure none were being sold that should have rightfully belonged with him...He walked away with a large sack of boxes after showing up with his list of S/N's...After splitting the remainder with another collector, I went home with 17 of them...I turned down the more modern plastic boxes......Ben

Could anyone give an estimate on what a box like this is valued at.The registered magnum I purchased a year ago came to me in the same pre model 19 box.I really have no idea.Mine also has a serial number on the bottom.

Some times things work out.

I bought this Combat Magnum from Charlie Sides a couple of years ago. I am kind of a serial number guy, so when this box was posted, it rang a bell.

I contacted David and he is sending the box to me.

This is an amazing community that we have.

Tim

Reunited !!!!

David sent the box over for me to look at, and he sent it at no charge. He said if I liked it, I could pay for it then or I could send it back.

Well it appears to be the correct box for the Combat Magnum. What are the odds of that ? And what an amazing forum that we have !
David is a true gentleman and a pleasure to visit with.

Just received the ship date request and it was shipped in August '56.

Here are some pics.

Reunion

The box has now gone home to Alabama to be with the Combat Magnum.
I have owned the box for probably 25 years. I got it from my dad, also David Reynolds. He was an engineer, a gun store owner, gun writer and promoter.
He put gun shows on as early as the 50's. Also brought shooters to Dallas for seminars and shooting sessions like Elmer Keith and Jeff Cooper.
He always bought, sold and traded guns and accessories. Could have acquired the box in our store or at a gun show.
Think the odds of this happening are astronomical. Nice to have a story with a happy ending.
Tim was a great guy to deal with. Glad he has the box now and is happy with it.

I just find it amazing that Smith still sells guns in boxes. My MP Pro CORE I bought at the beginning of 2021 shipped in a multiple compartment cardboard box.
