Hello everyone,
While at the LGS taking delivery of a mod 63, I also took delivery of an old 38 Hand Ejector Target. Serial is 670xxx. I'm guessing late 1930s production. The bluing on this is very dark and rich and still in very good condition. Normally I would suspect a re-blue, but all of markings and seams are very distinct. I think it's original but maybe the experts out there know what else to look for and can weigh in. It has the humpback hammer with great case color hardening. Unfortunately it didn't come with the original grips, so put on some faux stag service grips which feel nice in the hand. Looking forward to shooting this old target hand ejector and wanted to share with forum.

I'm guessing not many of these came with the humpback hammer.

Given that you're looking forward to shooting it, you'll be happy to know (if you don't already), that the sight on your gun is the first S&W target sight that won't "shoot loose"-----after only about 50 years, and more than a few efforts to accomplish the feat.

Here's the elevation and locking procedure: Make the initial adjustment with the aft screw (get close). Make the final adjustment with the screw immediately in front of the aft screw. Now turn the aft screw counterclockwise as far as it will go. You're done.

If you'll sit and stare at what you've done, you'll see the screw just in front of the aft screw is pressing against the frame---and the aft screw is pulling against the frame (by way of a flange nut residing in a slot in the frame)-----and neither the frame nor the sight is going to move.

As an aside, one full turn of an adjusting screw will move the point of impact one inch for each ten yards of range.

As another aside, yours is the finest sight S&W ever made, in that it is infinitely adjustable and won't "shoot loose". The later sight won't "shoot loose" either, but it's not infinitely adjustable; so if you're inclined to try to drive nails, light matches, blow out candles, or murder Bumble Bees, you're good to go!

Thanks for the info Ralph. I'll definitely heed your directions when sighting in.

I have a couple of other target M&Ps but they have the older style rear sight before production of the double fore/aft screws. One is a very early K22 from around 1931 and the other is a 32 WCF from 1908. Both have the single rear elevation screw.
