Neat guns, I have one a few years younger and one towards the end of production. Fun to shoot and inexpensive to reload. Enjoy.

Very nice .32-20 Model of 1905 4th Change, and your s/n is close to mine (118705). I thought mine was ca. 1923, but your letter now makes me think 1924. Your .32-20 is in much better condition, and the stocks are very nice. Mine is great mechanically and a good shooter. Enjoy!

I'm continually amazed at you guys finding 32-20, my favorite caliber since childhood.
I look, but I don't find these examples that keep showing up here.
Congrats,
Enjoy,
prescut

Yours could be 1924, but also might have shipped in 1923. 121318 shipped in December, 1923. Since shipping was way out of serial order, even a later date is possible. You just can't know without a records search.

Sometimes these old 32-20's find you instead of the other way around. My son and I were leaving a gun show after a day of browsing and on our way out of the building my son said "I can't believe you missed this S&W dad". He pointed to a table where the guy was packing up his stuff and there was this gun with a $250 price tag on it. I picked it up and it was tight as seemed to lock up perfectly with only a bit of freckling. I asked if he would throw the box of ammo in since he was about to get out of the 32-20 business and he said yes. I was asked if I wanted to sell it 3 times before we got outta' there. It shoots like a new one. I have a fondness for 32-20's since it is the first center fire I ever shot. My fathers friend had an 1873 Winchester in 32-20. I was in hog heaven shooting that gun.

My 1902 no change 4" is in worse shape than Murf205's and I paid more. But there is something about 32-20/32 WCF/32-20 CTG, that gets under your skin!

I think they get under our skin because, as my grandfather used to say,"they don't kick like a mule of beller' like an ox"! Almost anybody can shoot them accurately and they punch above their weight.

Sorry about the delay in pics, Dunkin Gunwash is by appointment only, and they have a problem finding people who want to work
The letter says it shipped as a 5" on 9/10/1924...Its caretaker at the time of the letter (1989) was the Chief of Police, San Antonio PD... ...Ben

I have one of these with a 5” barrel, made in 1913. What a fun caliber to shoot and reload for. I have been using a 115 gr cast SWC. It is a shame that this caliber did’nt return afterWWII.
I have seen some very nice Colt Police Positive Specials and OPs in this caliber.

The really funny part is that after I left that table I heard the vendor was doing the Happy Gun Dance over the great trade he had just made...In truth I traded away two guns I had taken in trade a couple of years prior, and couldn't seem to give away otherwise...In addition to the lettered .32-20 I also walked away from his table with an extremely nice pair of original N-frame presentation grips which now reside on one of my 29-2's...
As long as he was happy, I was happy...Maybe I'll pick up a lotto ticket later today... ...Ben

Truckman, I don’t know what you traded but that .32-20 is beautiful.
Guns like that are very hard to find around here in any condition. glowe’s perfect target would be impossible and way out of my league. Maybe I’m not hanging around in the right places. 😁

Thanks, leaving my possession were two strictly shooter grade Smiths...A 27-2 6" late production and a Mod. 38 with unmatched box plus $25...The little J-frame was unwanted by most for fear of developing a cracked frame if shot, it was almost unfired as it was...For those items which I was really tired of looking at (I have other nicer 27's and J-frames) I walked off with the lettered .32-20 and the N-frame presentation grips...Everyone was happy, and it's never bothered me to know I'm the butt of "look-what-I-traded-for" braggadocio... ...Ben

Well, as strange as it may seem to those of us who are afflicted with this affinity to Smith&Wessons, there are some who don't care for mundane calibers like 32 Longs, 32-20's or 38S&W's(sometimes mistakenly referred to a s 38 shorts).
Example: My little HE 32 Long that a guy had on a table with the only 1 other gun, a Browning 3" A-5. I did the usual quick assessment and offered $225 of his $250 asking price and he took it. Ya' never know. It's a good gun but the two guns above are stellar examples for sure.

I like the .32-20 as well. There's a couple of them floating around here.
