thanks Can anyone tell me the year of production or if it build on an I or J frame by the serial #?

I paid 595 six years ago, a newer version also no box or papers so an earlier model in good shape would be in the price range you mention

Probably shipped in 1954. Definitely an I frame. It is a .22/32 Kit Gun Model of 1953. With a serial number in the 10000 range, there is no way it should be marked as a Model 34. Model numbers don't show up until the 35000 range.

Agree with Jack, BUT sometimes S&W did some weird things with serial numbers. I have a 4" blue Model 34-1 with s/n M51977 and a 4" Nickel Model 34 no dash with s/n M68714. The Model 34 is almost 10000 numbers after the 34-1. Weird things happen with serial numbers. BTW the price is good down South.

Not terribly odd, many models were in production concurrently in dash and no dash models. It had more to do with features and changes, not date of manufacture.

Thanks, guys I brought it today and should be able to pick it up by early next week. I will post pictures, thanks again.

Kit Gun

# 10542 should be a pre 34 probably shipped in late 1954 or early 1955. I have #103xx shipped Nov 1954 and 106xx shipped Feb 1955 in my database, both are pre model guns!

Thank you Jceect that's what I'm hoping for, so it can keep my 4'' model 63 company which is # 13 out of the pilot 100 run lot.

Congrats, looking forward to seeing it! You did well especially if it’s a square butt. Less common in the early years of the 2” I frames.

I’ve seen the -1 left off of 34-1s more than any other model, I have two. With the M prefix which didn’t begin until the last half of 1968, and 8 years after the end of the I frame at the end of 1960, it’s clearly a model 34-1, a J frame.

A while back I made a deal at a local shop for a flat latch model 34 4” RB and a flat latch 30-1 3”. Paid 1300 for bot of them so it was either 500 for the 30 and 800 for the 34 or 600 and 700 respectively. I was happy either way.
