My latest .44 Special
I have wanted a .44 Special 2nd model hand ejector for a while and finally got my hands on one. Very tight gun. Perfect bore. I already sent for the S&W letter. I shot it Saturday. Fun gun.

Nice, I like those too. Do let us know what the letter says. Assume it's from the 1920s; the correct no medallion stocks show up for sale occasionally. Found some for one of mine on eBay awhile back. Enjoy it.

A man (or woman) can never have too many 44s! Beautiful gun, and congratulations. Those grips are pretty awsome, too.

I am so jealous.
I love 44 Specials. They’re just incredibly cool.
I have a few of Elmers books as well.

Congratulations of getting another .44 Special.
Those look like standard 1968 or later N frame Magna grips. Probably came off of a M28.

Great find! Don't see many nickel seconds.
Here's my favorite .44 - A 4" third Model.

Back when I was looking for a .44 Special, ALL I could find were 6 1/2" nickel 2nd models. The majority were probably re-nickeled. Of course, Alabama is very humid, which probably contributed to the abundance of nickel revolvers.

Mine is kind of a beater, but got lucky on the letter. Went to a Deputy Sheriff in Potter County, Texas.
Shipped June 1926. The grips are correct for that era.
The autograph was obtained by my father, also David Reynolds.
He visited Elmer in May of 1977 and of course took all of his Keith books to be signed.
The neutral background makes the gun darker.
The blue background makes the gun look brown.

Congratulations, that's a very nice 2nd Model! The only .44 Spl. I currently own is my 4" nickel .44 HE 3rd Model (Wolf & Klar Model of 1926, ca. 1927) that was modified and re-nickeled by some previous owner. The stocks are some Grashorn's that I "aged". It's probably not worth too much, but I like it and it's fun to shoot. Enjoy!

Here is my lone 44 Spl. It started life as a model 1917 shipped to the US Army and at some point was converted to 44 Spl. Even though all of the numbers match, are in the correct location and are the period correct size/font neither Mr. Jinks or the S&WHS could verify that this conversion was done at the factory. Maybe a lunchbox job. Shoots much better than it looks.

Just got my first 44 special today. It is a N frame model of 1950 like new with optional large target grips. I guess I'll have to work on finding a older one. This one popped up and had to have it.

Congratulations on your acquisition. That’s a beautiful specimen. I am relatively new to the .44 spl scene, but have become enamored with the venerable cartridge. It all started when I found my 3” 24-3 for cheap. I recently added back to back 696 no dashes. I am now looking for a 4” 24 or 624.

Don't have an older one, so I'm with LHD's 24-3s.
Never saw one for sale around here. My first carry gun was a Bulldog in .44 Special.
Those are some fine guns there. Thanks for sharing.

Think mine are always worth more to me than what someone would pay for them, except a few times I needed money for bills and such.
I wouldn't know what to offer you, and you most likely wouldn't want to sell it. Those are the kind I like.
The ones I did not want to sell? They have great caretakers. Easier to sell if it fits someone's style.

Judging by the letter, S&W managed to find a source for pearl large enough to make N frame grips.

I have acquired my fathers 1926 Model 44 Target revolver. It's in good but used shape and is fun to shoot. The first time I shot it I was about 5. The S/N is "S104742" The date stamped in the gold box is AUG 09-- but I can't read the rest of the date. Does anyone have any idea about what year this pistol was manufactured?

Yes and my guess is the work was done pre-ww2. I’ve been wondering how many pairs are out there for the N frame, it can’t be many as all the collectors I’ve talked to haven’t ever seen a pair before.

Steve, not an expert but since no one has given you a date I will try. Standard Catalog of S&W 4th Edition says serial number range for the post-war 1926 .44 Military is S62489 to S75000. With your serial number your gun should be a Model of 1950 .44 Military. They were built between 1950-1957. My guess is your number from early 50's.

I have a 44 2nd, and it lettered to September 12, 1923. Built from a leftover WWI 45 frame, and has the Springfield Armory proof mark.

Nice 2nd Model.
Looks like it received a pair of leftover gold medallion grips.

Lots of nice .44 specials. I think altogether I have 9 .44 Specials now. I probably will end up with more. Its a weakness.

Muley Gil, the stocks are numbered to the gun, so they may have been with the frame since it was started as a 45. I keep them off the gun, found a decent set of newer (but worn) cokes for it, since the bigger grips are easier on my hands.

Steve, I also welcome you to the forum. As others pointed out above, your .44 HE Target was probably manufactured in the mid-1950s. It would be called a Model of 1950 in the factory terminology of the day, or sometimes Fourth Model in the terminology of collectors. The Model of 1950 .44 HE Target was renamed the Model 24 under the company's model designation policy of 1957. The .44 Target models manufactured between 1950 and the introduction of the numerical model-marked guns are sometimes referred to as "Pre-24s," but that is a shorthand label that has emerged among collectors and is not universally embraced or even liked.
Though use of the gold box was coming to an end in the mid-'50s (some blue boxes were already appearing for other models), it was still used for the company's large N-frame models. Your box probably has the serial number handwritten on the bottom, but may not.
You have both an excellent revolver and a family heirloom. Shoot it in good health.

This is great! I very much appreciate all the interest. The box has the S/N handwritten on both ends. The pistol has Pachmayr grips on currently. I will remove the grips, take a picture of the S/N and the gun with the original grips. I would like to have the gun reblued, but from what I've read that lowers the value.

It's probably not worth too much, but I like it and it's fun to shoot. Enjoy!

That is actually the gun of my dreams.

I know of a minty 6.5” 624 with factory targets, but no box. I don’t pay attention to guns with barrels longer than 4-5 inches. What’s a fair price?

Thanks again for the info. I have a couple of pictures with the Pachmayr grips. I do have the original grips, will save for later pictures. Any suggestions on loading your own ammo?

Yes, it does have rear adjustable sights. I not sure yet how to post pictures.

Some of the best recipes are in this Handloader Magazine article and chart.
https://www.handloadermagazine.com/44-s-w-special-p
I like the "Keith Load" - a cast Lyman 250gr with Unique in my modern Ruger 44 specials, but for my S&W antique I load down a bit to cowboy/target level (it is 100 years old, and I want to keep it healthy). I buy coated 250gr from Missouri Bullet Company in bulk. Their quality is great, and require no lube.
Sorry, I'm not going to suggest "my loads" here. Research on the various powder manufacturers' and bullet manufacturerers' sites will usually give you good starting points. Black Powder and early smokeless loads were less "speedy", and 246gr LRN was the usual factory load, 750-800fps.
Purchase some manuals and learn. The rest of us have over the years. The .44 special can be as accurate as most .22's I've ever shot, and way easier to see the holes in the target downrange.

I got my letter for this one. 1927 model. I had some people (not here ) tell me it coulnd't have been a factory nickel gun. If you had it in your hands you would immdiately realize it has the original nickel. According to the letter it is a factory nickel gun. Has some honest holster wear but not bad. I will shoot it with the magnas for now but will half heartedly keep an eye out for some original grips. It always cracks me up to see the price on the letters. This one was 21.90. I wish I could buy a bunch for that now.

Just like my 1923 factory nickel. Old gal turned 100 this year. $21.90 then is $387.24 today, so that would still be a sweet price on a 44 Hand Ejector.

Even with inflation, that's still not a bad "today" price.
$382.84

1926 Model 44SPL Target
I finally posted some picture that I promised a couple of week ago. I did shoot the gun at a local gun club today and this gun is a dream to shoot.
