In 1949 Jack Webb envisioned Sgt. Joe Friday as a Los Angeles policeman.
After several others Webb picked Ben Alexander to play Friday's
partner on the radio show, tv show '52-'59, and finally a feature film in '54.
S&W must have been a fan. On June 4, 1954, S&W sent seven
Chiefs Specials and four K-38 Masterpieces to its California representative
Walter Lookabaugh for the "Dragnet" gang. The invoice shows three
of the Chiefs were engraved for Webb, Alexander and an L.A. Police
Captain who served as an advisor for the show. Richard Boone
played the Captain on the show. Who knows? Maybe Boone got
one of the Chiefs that wasn't personalized. Thanks to Dr. Roy Jinks
for the invoice.
The three personalized Chiefs are the uncommon bright blue, and
Webb's has the distinction of having a nickel cylinder.
For Christmas this year I treated myself to Alexander's Chiefs Special. Thanks
to forum member fzandome for turning me onto this last Sunday morning.
It wears birdseye maple stocks created by L.A. Police Officer Fuzzy Farrant.
They are not personalized.
Also in the package came a leather holster made by Lewis, who
catered to the needs of L.A.P.D. officers.
Terrible bright sunny day for photos. I'll fix that when it's overcast.
