1958 K22 evaluation
This Model 17 no dash was made in 1958. As many of you know they have come back as part of the classic line. Marred finish above S&W mark and on the bottom of trigger guard. Slight holster wear on muzzle. No other marks noted. I am going to ask $850. for it, your thoughts would be appreciated.

Under US law, the cutoff date for antique firearms is 1898. $950 seems high to me. There's some blue loss near the top of the sideplate and it appears there's more over the triggerguard. I'd expect that gun to sell closer to $700.

Looks like a nice one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it listed at $950 but I wouldn’t expect to see it sell quickly at that price.

But I wouldn’t turn down $800.

I'll post some better photos, there is no "bluing loss" except as noted above the S&W mark. Thanks everyone for your input.

I bought a 1951 K-22 in the last year. It was tagged at $700. I got it for a little less. It has some minor finish issues (at least I thought they were minor), but cleaned up nicely and shoots just fine.
If you start high, you can always come down. If you start low, you can't go up.

Looks like you edited the original price from $950 to $850. I'd say if you sold it up in Ringgold you might find a buyer at $850. Putting it on the Classifieds you have a nation wide market, but you and the buyer are looking at shipping and FFL fees. I like those 4 screw K frames and so do a lot of other people. Good luck.

What is that sideplate pin?
You have a nice early Model 17, and I would think it would easily be worth $850. I do have a question...what is the purpose of the pin in the upper sideplate? It's located approx. where the 5th screw would have been on the K-22s. I don't think I've ever noticed that before. Does it have something to do with just rimfire revolvers? I know there is not a pin like that on my 1948 K-22 Masterpiece.

I've never had one apart to that extent, but I'm guessing its a retaining pin for the firing pin spring...If I'm correct it should be present on all S&W rimfire revolvers...I know it is on mine... ...Ben

Without a box or tools and paperwork, $850 seems a little high. It should sell fairly quick at $700, you may have to sit on it a little for $850.

That pin looks a little large, like it was flattened while being installed.

If You intend to sell that gun and buy one of the new 'Classic' guns, I would look closely at the new model. My opinion is they are no where near as aesthetically pleasing, nor do they shoot as well. If not Your price would work up here.
