looking at a model 28 ND and in the pics there is no s/n stamped on the face of the cylinder. what year did they stop putting s/n's on cylinders? not sure if its original or not.

The end of "soft fitting" was also technically the end of numbered barrels and cylinders (May 3, 1957 per Doc44 in another post), so a model stamped gun should not have a serial numbered cylinder...but never say never with S & W.

that's interesting, this was a time of big changes at S&W factory. I'm assuming yours is a 5 screw, they probably had some overlapping parts between pre model# change and post model#.
like Murphydog said, you never know with S&W

S118xxx is a model marked 4 screw Highway Patrolman?
I've seen non-model marked HPs in the S182xxx's and have one.

A 34-1 with a 6" barrel? Hmmm. 35-1 perhaps?
