I bought this 10-5, (C627XXX) 4 in taper barrel. Just looking at the exterior the gun is really nice condition…internally she has some issues. I bought it knowing something was wrong and the price reflected that too.

The Good

• Single action it locks up just like any other Smith. On all cylinders too.
• The hammer won’t push off on any cylinder when fully back in singe action.
The Bad
• With the gun at rest, if you just wiggle the cylinder you can rotate the cylinder. I tried to determine if it was just 1 or 2 holes but it can occur on every one…..it’s a random occurrence happining about 50% of the time. During a slow single action motion I never hear the 2 distinct clicks from the stop like I do from my other Smith’s.
• The hand never fully retracts……it just sticks out a bit…..if you release the cylinder you can feel the hand sticking out. With the cylinder closed I inserted a business card between the frame and cylinder to release the cylinder stop…..this should allow the cylinder to just spin……this gun doesn’t spin because the hand catches the ratchet.
• The ratchet is chewed up a little too, the six lands or protrusions are not all the exact shape (tore up).

I’ve shot about 100 rounds single action with no issues…….don’t want to try DA.

What are your thoughts? I know that hand not retracting is an issue.

You didn't buy this from the guy who said he had "improved" his revolver by installing oversize hand and cylinder stop, did you?

Short answer take it to a gunsmith. I can trouble shoot some of the things for you but it could be lots of things.

Go ahead and check to see if all chambers "carry up"?

The cylinder stop could be fitted wrong or not fitted at all the the cylinder notches, the spring behind it could be missing, broker or kinked, trashed ext... Do the cylinder notches look clean or has buffing bob gotten his hands on it?

As for the hand, it could be "messed" with already. the spring that sits on the leg of the hand could be installed wrong, broken ext.. Someone could of tried to screw with the hand "window" allowing the hand to set to far forward. If the ratchet is truly screwed up could be from someone fitting a new cylinder incorrectly, or trying to fix carry up incorrectly. take some photos of the hand protruding and the window it comes out of.

Sounds like some one hack-smith'd it at sometime, put it back together wrong, it could be from wear to a point but doesnt sound like it totally

Finally had time to take a couple of pics, one showing the hand not fully retracted, one showing the condition of the ratchet. Overall the gun is in good shape. The machined stop slots in the cylinder are all clean and burr free. The sideplate screws do show evidence of removal. Here's where I'm at....not looking to smith this gun myself (install a new hand or cylinder stop). I'm am capable of removing the sideplate properly and looking for dried grease or dirt that could be causing my issues. If deep cleaning doesn't fix it...what would be a HIGH estimate to repair? Thanks
