Default Model 19 no dash

Hello all, was wondering what the going rate would be for a mint 19 no dash 4”. Comes with the correct gold box and also has mint Diamond target stocks on it. I ran into it at a LGS, I saw the asking price and will keep that to myself for now. I don’t want it to influence anyones answer. Thanks

I'd expect to find it where I shop tagged at $1000-$1200 possibly more with the box/papers/tools.

All I know is I looked long and hard for one. Unfortunately I could not find the receipt for it and I can't remember the cost. Mine is not mint, nor does it have the box. It did fill a gap in my collection. In today's market, at auction, I would expect one like you described to go well north of $1200. 4 C-notes today would be highway robbery.

You are going to tell us the asking prices are you not...after more input from the members here?

Yes sir, will do Retired. Just looking for what the average number would be. I’m also located in CT so not sure if that alters anything price wise. I’m a small business owner and can’t believe the cost rise for parts/fuel. I’m assuming no different for the old revolver world.

If you are lucky the LGS will just price it as what a near mint Model 19-3 or 19-4 with box, papers and tools are worth. Like around $1200.

But I would pay a lot more than that. Early Model 19's are not easy to find anymore. I'd add at least four C notes to that $1200 estimate. Especially from a retail shop. And then you have to pay tax and transfer/registration fees....

I picked up this non-model marked one last year for a little over $3,600, including shipping, auction fees, and tax. From above it sounds like I paid over market, but it is in fantastic shape and I'm happy with purchase.

Shipped in April of 1956. Came with numbered box and assessories (except SAT which I recently acquired from another member, thanks Dave!). Last photo shows with smooth targets that I picked up later.

I have a 2-1960 M19-0 shipped to Williams Gun Sight Corp. Bought it at a Reno show for $1,100 a few years back. Just about mint in it's original box. Next up was an early pre M19. $1,200, just about mint. I can live with these prices. Big Larry

DEF3 I am in CT also. The only model 19 no dash that I have seen here was at CT Firearms Auction at one of their last monthly online auctions. February, I think. It appeared to be in rough shape with high edge and muzzle bluing lose. There was also significant surface rust. As I recall it did have diamond target stocks that looked descent. The bottom half of a blue box and a piece of wood that was starting to look like stocks. I had other things going on the day of the sale. When I left my home, I checked the website. The bid was at $650 a few hours before the auction. The only other model 19's I have recently seen here, were both -3's that were high grade shooter quality, with boxes and documents. One was priced at $750 and the other was priced at $799 just for reference.

OK DEF3, it looks like the prices are all over the place, as I expected. Could it be time to tell us the story on the one you are looking at? I hope it is not too much and you are able to buy it. A mint, early Combat Magnum, with original box no less would be a real prize. Call me an enabler. I admit it.

I advanced to the level of self-enabler at some point...It was a gradual, subtle effect best compared to walking up a gentle slope as opposed to climbing a set of stairs...You reach the same level either way, but the effort seems less and you're not as breathless when you get there...At that time I was just strolling the aisles of some gun show and spotted something I liked on a table...Instead of thinking, "Hey I should ask someone if this is one I should have", I just negotiated what I thought was a fair number, said "I'll take it" and reached in my pocket for the cash...

Not a completely painless transformation as mistakes can still be made, but the satisfaction of being a self-enabler can be its own reward......Ben

Alright gang, those are some beautiful 19’s. So the one I’m looking is selling for $2250.00. Survey Says.

It's not totally outlandish for what it is if it passes a thorough examination...If it's part of a dealer's inventory, maybe there's room to maneuver...If it's a private offering it may carry a valuation commensurate with the owner's fondness for it (I'm very familiar with that one)...Either way it won't hurt to make what you consider a fair offer......Ben

Hello all. Thought I'd chime in since the Model 19 is my favorite revolver. I picked this 1960 up a couple of years ago with TT, TH & Red Ramp. Not nearly as mint as some have shown, but a beautiful revolver nonetheless.

I'm not a "rich collector" just a " moderately well to do accumulator".......if there's nothing special about the gun [box, but tools and docs?]......... it's "one of a million" P&Red 4" 19s [no dash to -4s]..... I've got a couple of 4" and 2 1/2" P&R -3,-4s just as nice and a couple of P&R 19/66 shooter grade guns

I'd pass......YMMV........your money your "want"!

$2250 plus 8.25% for tax would be tough for me. The pre-19s, no dash and -1s show up rarely where I shop though so perhaps the question is how badly do you want one and when do you think another will turn up. I think I'd be inclined to make the shop a cash offer well below the $2250 and let them know it is a standing offer. If you aren't a regular customer of that shop such an offer may not carry much weight but if you are a frequent buyer they may call you . . .eventually.

Awhile back I looked at a very nice 6 inch Highway Patrolman (no box/papers although it did have a great set of non-relieved target stocks) but it was priced at $1399. Owner told me he'd paid too much for it and I knew it would sit there a long time at that price. I'm a frequent customer so texted a trade offer but got no response. I was there recently and asked about it. Someone had looked at it and paid the sticker price without attempting to negotiate. You never know.

$2250 plus tax would be a tough one for me. Over the years, one gun that I was always on the lookout for at guns shows and gun shops was an early Combat Magnum. I have no way of knowing for sure but in my mind I always thought of them like the early Model 29's in that they likely received polishing and fitting by the best workers at S&W.

And I never once actually saw one for sale. Now, in retirement and having a LOT less disposable income and having already downsized my collection considerably I'd really be torn if I found one. I guess I'd do two things: Try and negotiate the price down and if the seller wouldn't budge start thinking about what I could sell to fund the purchase.

Chances are that another one in that condition with box and contents isn't going to come around anytime soon.

I am having enough fun sticking with the dash 2 variations. Not sure I can afford trying for no dash versions.

Spin 132 ,
Mike that is a nice early one,
Would you be so kind as to post a picture of your guns backstrap and show the guys what feature makes the first 1500 or so
unique to Combat Magnums?

Here is my Combat Magnum from August 1956. Not as nice as spin132 gun. I would say about 95%, but I am not an expert grader. Box numbers to the gun.

Okay, time for the back story.
The model 19 was owned by a gentleman down the street from me and when he died his widow wanted to sell his guns. I was prepared to pay upwards of seven bills for it, but she wanted to have it valued by a gun store. I told her to not let anyone touch it or rotate the cylinder, and if they tried she was to put her hand on top and tell them not to touch.

She took it to an LGS about 20 miles away and set the box on the counter. She is a rather timid person and I know she was or would be intimidated by the men in the store.

Some local idjit opened the box lifted the revolver from the box and spun the cylinder. It was NIB with no marks of any kind. The only thing the original owner did was take it out of the box about once a year and wipe it down with a silicone wipe.

She came home and when I saw the marks on the cylinder, I told her it was a $700.00 pistol when she left but it was a $400 dollar gun now. And I explained why and how it had gone down in value. I bought it for $400.00 and also a Weatherby .243 win MK5 Vanguard for the same amount. Same thing and the same idjit. It had a bolt that had never been cycled. If I could find that idjit I'd wrap a 2X4 about 7 feet long around his head a couple of times.

NO, I was not taking advantage of her, even though I was tempted too.

I sold the Weatherby but the M19 sits in the dungeon wrapped in the original paper in the original box with all the tools and I take it out about once every 5 years and check it for dust. The M19, 6", an M-59, an M-10, 6" and two other like new pistols with the appropriate ammo are all in a 20mm ammo box. Only on the dryest days of the year, when the temp is hovering at about minus 10deg F and has been there for a couple of days do I open the ammo box.

DEF3, Well OK, Stutter, stammer... $2250. I would be pretty excited about finding that gun, but not that excited. After some up and down negotiating I might, begrudgingly, settle for $1800 OTD in the heat of the moment. My current, not so perfect, Combat Magnum would quickly go on the auction block, mainly just to make myself feel a little better about the transaction. There were a couple guns from the past that I was bidding on that I gave up on and later wished that I had kept going. In that kind of situation one never knows where it will end though. Dealing, one on one with the LGS is different.

Best of luck to you in your moment of decision making.

Photo from OGCA, many decades ago. Old school negotiating. I have no idea who won this battle.

Thanks guys, this is a tough one. One moment I’m all in and then I’m not. Life has enough stress as it is lol. Something about those Diamond targets tho that gets me every time. I see one and have to handle it. I just like that old stuff. Tomorrow will be decision making day, hopefully I can get him to come down in price a bit.

DEF3,
I would say at that asking price It probably won't sell quickly although many dealers list collectors guns online nowadays.

A high condition four screw Model marked 19 no dash is not as commonly encountered for sale in the wild and I can talk myself into or out of anything.
On the one hand you say if I pass will another one ever fall in my lap again or will I be saying, I had one in my hands bit passed.
On the other hand the Model marked 19 had a fairly long run compared to the first 1500 or so that are the only ones to have the 6 groove tang which makes them very rare and unique, if it was one of those I wouldn't hesitate.
A high condition early CM with box etc is a collectors gun and priced accordingly, shooter grade guns are priced accordingly,
As the value of the US$ dollar spirals down it takes more and more of them to buy collector grade guns, gold , silver, gasoline, bread etc.

One of the famous lines repeated in the collectors circles is you don't pay too much for a high condition collectors piece , but sometimes you pay it too soon,
When I first got into the hobby some 15 years ago Model marked 19's in high condition were commonly found at $600-$750, if you got real lucky maybe $450.
Ultimately the definition of a "good deal" is one where the buyer and seller are both happy,
I'd make a serious offer and see what they say.

It has hurt to pay top dollar for a rare gun but I've passed on many that I look back and now regret passing up.
Good luck and post pics if you get it.

My 19-0 doesn't get out much what with M67 and M686 in the safe, maybe I should let a collector have it. Unfortunately it lacks any of the new gun stuff.

DEF3, have to agree with the Engine guy, Brad. He is my go to mod-19
guy. He knows them and follows them closely. $2250 is a bitter pill, but they dont come along that often. Back in the day they were sold to carry and use. To find one in the condition stated is a rarity. AH!. negotiate and swallow the pill. The taste does not last that long.

I could not stand it any longer so I went down and pulled mine. I guess it's been a while because I forgot it is not model marked. K315720 from ~1957. It has the small football cut out like spin123's. 10 groove back strap. I still can't find the receipt so I'm no help with valuation. I took a couple quick snap shots. The worse part is a little flaking in the trigger guard. It actually looks better than my...photography shows.

.357 Combat Magnum, K260005, shipped to Pete Kuhlhoff of Argosy Magazine on January 20, 1956 with a blue presentation case (one of ten reported by collectors). Click on the photos for a better look.
