Have him pull the stocks off and look for a service date stamp that will be on the left side of the front grip strap near the bottom. Look for a re-finish mark that will take the form of R-B or R-S in an oval cartouche along the left grip frame back strap These indicate re-finish blue or refinish standard, which is blue.
There was a time when guns sent in for re-finish had then current roll marks added. These included a sideplate logo and re-mark of the address block on the lower right frame above the trigger guard. It is possible/probably the gun was re-finished during the time period when this was being done.
I had a 2nd Model .44 Hand Ejector re-finished in 1974 and they added the sideplate logo!
