Think this gun was a project in my dad's desk at our family gun store in Dallas. My dad died in 1992 and the store closed in 1994. A few years later I was given a few boxes of left overs. About three years ago found the frame with the barrel and a few parts installed in a box of stuff that came from the gun store. Later found a zip-lock bag with most of the other parts in another box. Had to buy a few parts. All matching numbers including assembly number. Serial number 26184, assembly number 60124. Roy said it shipped June 1926.
Posted about the project and you guys were very helpful. Told me what parts I needed, etc.
I'm not very mechanically inclined so took it to a local gunsmith for assembly. Y'all thought his price was too high. Mbrgr1 (Mark) in Oklahoma kindly offered to assemble it at no charge. Discovered the gun had a couple of problems. The trigger guard was bent to the point that the trigger would not function. The frame was slightly bent so that the barrel was a little at an up angle. Prevented the cylinder from properly closing.
Mark was able to get that squared away and I went to Oklahoma for a shooting session and to bring the gun home.
SCSW 4th says most but not all 2nd models are found with a lanyard ring in the butt. This one has a plug where the ring would go. Also says barrel lengths other than 6 1/2" will bring a substantial premium. Mine is 5". Gun is in fair condition with a non factory refinish. The grips were Franzite like you saw a lot of in the 50's.
Asked the group if I should get a letter. The results were mixed leaning towards no. Don Mundell kindly hinted that the gun had shipped to an individual, so ordered the letter and the invoice. The invoice says "Do not have rings in butts" explaining the plug in the butt. The letter says delivered to Frank Gamblin, Deputy Sheriff Potter County, Amarillo, Texas. Frank later worked for Amarillo PD. Thanks to SWSC for the newspaper clippings.
In the 1930 U S Census for Amarillo Frank was listed as age 52, born in Texas, occupation officer police force. In 1926 he would have been 48.
Found some correct grips on the Forum and sent the plastic stags down the road.
