Hey guys. I'm brand new here and seeking insight into the age of my S&W 38 special. I apologize if i do this wrong. I've already gleamed enough information on this sight to somewhat narrow it down. I'm aware of the date of manufacture vs date of shipment discrepancy but any info is much apriciated. In all honesty I'm not at the point where I'm willing to purchase the S&W book for a more definitive answer yet.
Here are some clues for the community to work with.
It's a five screw model,which if I'm understanding means it's newer than 1905. And it's SN is 227771
Thank you for any help. Regards

.38 M&P Model of 1905 - 3rd Change serial number range from 146900 to 241703 manufactured 1909-1915.
I have 210874. Mine shipped May 14, 1913.

Thanks David. So if your # is the 5th month of 1913, mine is most likely from late 1913 or early 1914 at a guess. This is exactly the kind of info I wanted. Cheers!

Nice. Mine is a fixed sight with 6 inch barrel and factory blued. The actions tight but there's a little slack in the cylinder when open but nothing major. We've had it since the 70s and a straight shooter. As you say, not too bad for 110 year old iron.

Great advice on using 158 grain bullets.

Hawk, it has been in your family since the 1970s. When was the last time anyone shot it and of course cleaned and lubricated it?

It's been inactive for 10+ years. The gun itself is clean in every area having been thoroughly cleaned and oiled before storing. Admittedly it is in need of another service. I wonder if hopps grease could alleviate some of the cylinder slack? Or if that is an appropriate use for it?
