Yesterday, my brother was calling some local gun shops, including a not-so-local one he rarely calls in a kind of out of the way area of So. California. They described a rather nice 5" pre-model 21, at a really nice price. He checked it out today and what he found was an original (or as he is fond of saying, "all up") 1947 transition pre-model 21 in what he says is 96%.

It sounds like it's a "widow consignment." He paid his $1,000.00 plus tax and registration fee. He picks is up in 10 days. He thinks he did well. Assuming he's correct about the grading (and he most always is), it sounds like he did very well, indeed. What say you?

[Edit] Oops, forgot to put the barrel length (5") last night.

I say he is a smart man for doing his home work and checking around like that. It obviously paid off, big time.

Well, I sold one to a deputy sheriff in Marysville Ca around 1965, but I think it was a M21 (5").

Not one of my shrewder moves, but neither was it one of my better years either.

Que sera, sera.

Congratulations. Nice guns.

Great score. Congrats.
Actually, if made in 47, you have a Post-war (Transition) Model 1926 (44 HE- 3rd Mod).
The term "Pre-21" would be more aptly applied to the 1950 44 Military (44 HE- 4th Model), a short action gun which became the Model 21.

Yep, that's it, a Post-war (Transition) Model 1926 (44 HE - 3rd Model). He told me all that, but it was a mouth full, so I shortened it . . . and apparently gave up accuracy. And, yes, it is a <STRIKE>short-action</STRIKE> long-action.

I'll post pics after I have a chance to see and photograph it. I think he's going to pick it up on May 11th, but it may be a few more weeks after that until I see him. He lives in Bakersfield and I'm in the Thousand Oaks area of California (about 120 miles apart).

How about the approximate serial number range? No, we're not interested in the exact one, Just numbers like "S713xx" would be fine!

The serial number is S688xx. It looks like I'll be seeing my brother on the 17th and I will get some photos then.
