Default More of Dan's work

I sent a set of grips from my 1905 4th change to Dan several days ago and they came back in today. As usual, excellent work. The left side was not bad and just needed a bit of refreshing. The right was well worn and had a bit of a chunk out at the bottom edge. Here are some before and after pics.

Many thanks, Dan.

Very nice. What is the process for repairing the chip? Is it putty or a replacement piece of wood?

I can't speak about how the pro restorers fix smaller grip chips, but i've had good luck by mixing up some brown epoxy and applying a dot. You may have to experiment a bit to get the right shade of brown. You must be very careful to keep it from running into the checkering. I use plumber's putty to mask off such areas. It usually takes a couple of epoxy applications. I smooth the profile by using a fingernail emery board. I have done several that way, and can't see the repair.

My main problem is freshening the checkering. I just don't have the skill to do it well. I guess I need a lot more practice.

That would be me . There are a few threads out there with examples of other work. I can bring a "few" references to the table if need be as well.

You can contact me via PM.
