K-22 at 50 yards
I bought this gem about 2? years ago, and upon firing it I knew it was accurate.
I did some sighting in at 25 yards the other day, and today I was tinkering about on the 50 yard outdoor range, I fed the thing American eagle 38gr hp ammo, and did 3 sets of 6.
This group was the best at only 3.25",
The others were ok, But this was best but just by a little bit.
I was sitting, Both elbows rested and two hand hold, No other rest.
I am really impressed with this K-22.
I have others, But they dont seem as accurate.
It was a happy day shooting for me, I was VERY pleases with the results!
What do you think?
EDIT ( serial # dates to 1953)
I always thought each one is different, I cant shoot my 8 3/8" 17-2 this good.
I think I got a really good one with this K-22!

K-22
That is a handsome K-22. From what these eyes see from the hammer design, it looks to be from the late 1940s - early 1950s. Is that about right?
More to the point, that was some very good shooting with iron sights. I would be doing well to accomplish that with a scoped revolver. Way to go!
Did you try many types of ammo?
Thanks for sharing and
Regards,
Dyson

Good Shooting!!!
Great job Peter. I have one from 1957 that is boringly accurate
I had one a little older that was the same way. All the k22's I have had or have been around have all out shot even most of the target autoloaders. In fact I got rid of a decent shooting Model 41 because my K22 outshot it.

Nice shooting, Peter! I can't even see .22 holes at 50 yards. Everyone should have a chance to enjoy shooting one of these guns. They're about as good a gun as was ever made.
Thanks,
Jerry

You cant see the holes, You just shoot 6 rounds and peep through the looking glass and see how you did....
Just good clean fun!

Since that American Eagle isn't known to be the most accurate ammo in the world, you wonder what it would do with Ely EPS, Fiocchi SM320, or similar match grade ammo. Of course, as finicky as some .22's are, American Eagle may be the ammo of choice in this particular gun. Would be neat experiment to test several brands at 50 yards.

CCI Stingers are about the most accurate round I've used (never tried match grade), they would probably be dead on out of it.

Its been my experience that K22s shoot as well as the shooter is capable, plus some. If you shoot a lot and try real hard, you can improve the operators part of the job. If you use a machine rest, you can probably find a brand of ammo that your specific gun seems to like better.
We're not just talking accuracy, but also how clean the gun is after a brick of ammo. Also, how well it extracts its fired shells in the last gunload or two. Some ammo seems to require brushing the chambers every hundred or so rounds (a pain.) To me, its worth it to try different brands and velocities to find one which burns cleaner. Of course that was in the distant past when you could walk into a hardware, sporting goods, or discounter and take your pick of almost any ammo you could find. May not be a practical alternative these days.
Which all leads me to wonder what we'll be telling our great grandkids in 20 or so years. They'll be sure we're spinning tall tales about the good old days. The ones where we'd take a Saturday morning and hit 4 or 5 gun shops, each with a wall full of ammo. Every brand imaginable, and each brand having high and low velocity, solid and hollow point, along with high and low velocity shorts, and even the oddball longs. And off on one side were just a few imported oddities, like overpriced match ammo, and CB and BB caps. They'll be sure we're lying. Dreamers.
What was the John Wayne movie? McClintock? Where they talk of elk as big as buffalo?

Peter,
I love my K22 with 6 inch barrel and it's very accurate and I have a Model 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel and it's a laser beam. This thing is scary accurate and I can't wait to go out and shoot it some more.
I had a friend here last month and we shot the 17-4 for the first time and like I said it's very accurate. I had to pry the gun from my friends hands because he was in love with it.

Dick,
That quote was from the movie Big Jake right before the big finally.
Interestingly enough my 40's K22 liked Remington blue/green box target real well. I say interestingly because that's the ONLY gun I ever got that ammo to shoot good in.
Out to 25yds I like subsonic ammo, and it doesnt really matter what brand as they all shoot very well.
Years ago a rifle shooting buddy and I used to play around at 100/200yds with pistols even 22's. Of course that was in the day of cheap ammo and good eyesight, but it was pretty amazing what we could do with practice and it was really fun seeing the look on someone's face when you call a shot on a pop can at that distance with a 22.

Good shooting!
My 22 revolvers seem to do the best with standard velocity lead ammo.
But I can't see 50 yards away, much less shoot that far.

I only get a chance to get to the range every couple of months on average,,, But I will try other ammo's and WILL be playing more on the 50 yrd range with that K-22
It's fun shooting my 6 shots not seeing a darn thing, and looking through the glass to see holes where I wanted them!!
Thanks all
Peter

Try Remington Cyclones. They are consistantly one of the three most accurate rounds in all of my .22's, rifle or handgun. I don't know what makes that true, but it is.

May I suggest some target grips as they improve my shooting over the standard grips. Even the texture ( checkering/smooth) on the grips affects my accuracy, go figure.....
I have the best luck with Federal bulk from Walmart and Winchester powerpoints - if I can find any !!!
I am amazed that you shoot at 50 yards and have such a tight pattern.
I cannot see 50 yds ( even 25 yds is a stretch ) - without a scope.
Have fun and good luck. JW

Try either RWS R50 or Eley 10X in your revolvers. I've shot some bullseye at 50 yards. My K22 (17-3), using one chamber, shot several 10-shot groups well under 1" using a Ransom Rest during load testing. John Hurst, one of LAPD's great pistoleros, shot a K22 when he broke 2650 (third person to do it) in the 22 phase of the 2700 course. With the K22 it's all about the ammo.

Geez, I bought a .22 to be able to shot alot on the cheap. At $17/box of 50, this is out of my pricing. I will have to make due with something else.

Very accurate little guns and lots of fun to shoot. I have tried lots of ammo out of mine and they like the Federal bulk packs, Winchester Super X power points, CCI mini mags. Dont even bother with that Armscorp junk it fouls the cylinder fast.

Hello Peter
In a recent Long Range handgun shooting discussion at our local range, I decided to try a B-27 Man sized Target at the 100 Yard Line. I had brought with me my .22 Magnum Model No dash 48 that is a 4 screw model, with a 4" Barrel shown. Some of my fellow Range safety officers had been ridiculing the performance and accuracy of the .22 Magnum in a handgun as they felt it was not accurate claiming the revolver never had time to even burn all the cartridges Powder before it left the barrel. I then set up the B-27 Target at the 100 Yard range, Placed my 48 on a sand bag, Placed six rounds of CCI Maxi-Mag cartridges and slow fired holding on the upper neck region of the Target. When the smoke cleared I retrieved the Target and a silence fell over the officers that claimed this caliber was not all that accurate as they saw the Proof that 5 out of 6 shots were in the Kill Zone...You should try the 100 Yard range some time it is a ball and very surprising in it's final results... Hammerdown
