28-2 drilled and tapped?
Yesterday I passed on a pretty clean, correct grip model 28-2 at a gun show for $500. I did so because it had a thompson center scope with holes in the top strap. I just wanted to confirm that the model 28 was never tapped by the factory? I doubt it would have been but I have not been able to find any info about it. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge and I'm sure others too, the 28 never had a drilled and tapped top strap. It might be a good shooter, but killed it as a collectable.

Ya I thought that. There's no reason for S&W to drill and tap a model 28 for a gun that was marketed to police departments. I would like to find one, but not one thats altered in that way.
My quest for a N frame 357 goes on...

While not exactly as common as ants at a picnic, there are more than enough 28s around to not bother with one drilled and tapped.
Most modifications don't add value. The modification you might desire may be of no use to a new owner. If you modify the gun, plan on keeping it.
All in all, most of us want a gun that is un-messed-with.

+1 on nicky4968's post. So often a seller tries to collect what he paid for modifications and emphasize how much he improved it - does not hold water with me. In fact, it has a negative effect on value to me. I always want as close to factory condition as possible.

Knock off a hundred and seventy five bucks, fill in the extra holes with plug screw's and you have a shooter.

For $500 I would expect an absolutely pristine 28.
And then I wouldn't buy it.
Too much money. Better to chip in a bit more and get a 27 which is 10 times the gun IMO.

That would likely be a heckuva shooter, but I doubt I'd go over $300 for it, and then only if it is mechanically perfect and the mounting job is professional. Frankly, I would have little trouble finding very, very nice 28s around here for no more than $400-425. Not that they're under every bush, but I'm sure I could find one within 50 miles on any given day.
