I recently got a model 10-6 in a trade deal. It has a 4" heavy barrel and target grips. It's in great shape, with the finish about 98%, the action smooth but tight, and the barrel nice and sharp/clean. It shoots great, too. I love fixed-sight S&W revolvers. This one groups around two inches at 12yards firing double action off-hand in a rapid string. My question is, can the model 10-6 handle a modest diet of +p ammo? I don't want to shoot the +p stuff often, but I might like to carry this revolver when light weather clothing prevents me carrying my N-frame 22-4. I would want to be able to put twelve or eighteen rounds thru it occasionally just to keep in practice, and use standard 38special fodder for the more frequent and higher round-count shooting sessions. It is not marked +p on the barrel, but it certainly feels pretty robust. I'd appreciate a verdict from the experts so I don't damage the thing. I've got a set of magna-style pearl grips coming for it this week, which will make it more slender for carry.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to order a few boxes of the Buffalo Bore stuff. I like slow moving, heavy chunks of lead better than fast moving, lightweight chunks of lead. It's good to know the +p stuff is okay, too, but give me a heavy bullet with a wide meplat and I'm a happy camper.

Thanks again.

Congrats on finding a great gun! Plus P's won't hurt it, either in "modest" amounts or a glutton's diet of them. :)

Your 10-6 can handle any +P ammo. And you do not have to baby it. I had a older Model 15 combat masterpiece and use to shoot the +P LSWCHP round all the time. I have a little later version of your model 10 and shoot any +P round. You will love your new revolver.

Good luck,

Glad I found this post. Bought a Model 10-6 last month and decided to load it with Lehigh 140gr Xtreme Penetrators. At the time I didn't realize they were +p rated and I was concerned. Thanks.

Your 10-6 is a strong, robust revolver. It will handle any and all factory-loaded .38 Special including +P and even the .38-44 equivalents being loaded by Buffalo Bore and others. Enjoy !

Reply #8 dug this thread out of the coffin it peacefully rested in for 3 ½ years.

Some how no one wrote that for decades S&W literature has written that +P .38 special is fine in all their steel K frames that are new enough to be stamped with a model number. Many members believe S&W is over cautious but that hardly matters in this thread where the inquiries are about model 10s.

Are you all crazy????!!

+P will blow a K frame S&W to the moon! Everyday we hear about dozens if not hundreds of guns being blown to smithereens by factory loaded ammo that they recklessly sell to anyone with the money to buy it. Despite all the thousands of guns being destroyed the ammo companies keep making and selling this dynamite!

Help spread the word about +P. It's much too powerful for any gun.

This just ain't so.......

+P is WITHIN Saami pressure limits and a model 10 K frame can shoot these continuously no probs a all. If you have heard about guns being destroyed 'every day' it certainly can be attributed to something besides +P loadings. The 'K' frame is a strong, modern gun.

PERHAPS you have heard of the .357 mag 'K' frames like the model 19 that couldn't hold up under heavy .357 mag fire. No kabooms, though, the revolver would just shake looks prematurely.

True dat...

Litlle known fact is that the destruction of Hiroshima was NOT caused by an A bomb.
It was the result of a dim-witted Japanese soldier who unknowingly loaded his captured S&W M&P with some early plus p ammo. Sayonara baby!!

He's joking, bro. SaxonPig is renowned as the amateur scientist who did an experiment definitively proving how extensive use of +P ammo is just fine in K-38s. :) The thread here is worth seeking out.

The Titanic didn't sink because it hit an iceberg, someone mistakenly shot a plus p round thinking it was a flare, and that was all she wrote.

I kinda thought so....

I kinda thought so but I was expecting a PS or something that said, "Sarcasm" or "NOT!" or at least a :D
