Question Looking at a 14-2. A few questions...

I've got my eye on a K-38 Model 14-2 that's up for sale.

It is in very good condition. The finish is shiny and intact except for some slight holster wear at the muzzle. If I'm reading the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (I gotta find an abbreviation for that), it dates to around 1965.

The trigger is nice and crisp, the action is in time, and appears to have VERY little wear.

Unfortunately, someone discarded the box and papers so all I can get is the gun itself. Also, the grips have been changed to some smooth wood with finger grooves.

Please help me understand what grips are correct for this gun and what an estimated price would be for a set in pristine condition. I have read the SC of S&W section on grips, but I'm still unsure what is correct. I think that it is supposed to have the large square butt target grips with a diamond at the grip screw. If so, this would be grips like on my Model 53. My K-22 has the smaller square butt diamond grips. (The K-22 is supposedly unfired and NIB.)

Can someone patient and knowledgable help me understand what grips I am supposed to have on these guns and how to identify them. I'd even be willing to start using the proper names if I knew what to call each variant.

Thanks,

Rawhyde

the M14 could have came with either target grips or magna style, without the org. box to read the end label there's really no way to tell for certain, short of a $50 Roy letter.

If the gun has the wide hammer and or trigger, then there's an increased chance it would have came with the larger target style grips.

Not having the serial number but it being a -2, I would suspect grips with diamonds around the screw would be proper, IIRC the diamond grips were std up to about 66-67.

Oh and BTW..........Welcome to forum, neighbor

Should be like this. As I learned, PC grips are not appropriate. Should be a great gun.

I lettered my 14-2 and found that it was shipped from S&W with no grips.
