IF there IS one on the web - I've never heard of it! The SCSW[Standard Catalog of S&W - a hardcover book] is the best reference I'm aware of.
Your quickest response would be to post the S/N's here and I'll just about guarantee you'll get answers in less than a day!!

I have a fairly comprehensive list that dates from 1956 to 1979. If you list the prefix (S or N) and the first three digits of the s/n, I can give you a pretty good estimate of when the 44 Magnum was shipped.
If the guns have an alpha-numeric serial number, I can't help much.

Serial number list on the web? I hope not. Owning or at least sharing access to the Standard Catalog book is what separates us from animals. Anybody not owning the Standard catalog should be required to post there here and beg.

Welcome to the Forum magnm2300. Sounds like you have a fixed site K frame revolver from the 1950-1951 time period from what I can tell - the most common being the .38 caliber Military and Police (Pre-Model 10). Someone may be able to come along with more definitive information for you on the date, and any additional information you can offer can help others to pin down the model.

I think the Standard Catalog is a gateway book. It leads to not only knowledge of Smith and Wesson minutia, but the purchase of more books and inevitably more guns. Caveat emptor!

Ctg is the abbreviation for cartridge.

For those seeking ship dates on their guns, it is considered better form on this forum to start your own thread with your questions as opposed to tagging on to someone else's thread. That may be why the later posts received no responses. It is just a courtesy and helps keep things in their place.

Good morning. Please excuse my ignorance as I am new to this site. I recently purchased what appears to be a 4 screw 29- with no number after it. It is in near perfect condition. The serial # is S197266. It is 4" blue. The pistol has after market grips. That is the only negative thing I can say about it. I noticed that the barrels front sight has two small pins that are perpendicular to the barrel. Is there any one who can tell me what I have here? I am thinking the gun is around 57 but the 2 pins are throwing me off. Also I'm confused by the pre 29 information I am seeing on the web. The yoke on my gun is stamped 29-.

The book is available at most major book stores. And the major auction sight. I bought mine new from Amazon. It was the cheapest price that I could find.
Do a web search for the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd edition. You will find many places that sell the S&W bible. JA

It's about a $30 book, available on Amazon and eBay and lots of other places. I have had mine for about 4 years, and look at it almost every day. It is even available as a Kindle version to put on a smart phone, where you can "take it with you" whilst you are out shopping.

Hello,
If you are looking to date your 586, its from about 1983. If you need other info please start a new thread in the 1980 and newer forum.
