Model 17-4 Serial Number Help
Hi everyone, trying to find a bit more info on a 17-4 I just won on an auction site. I checked the FAQ S/N list that was posted by SaxonPig, but I'm still confused as to what exactly I may have.
Serial number is 95K222X Looks like it may be early 80's manufacture??
I probably should have asked here before I bid, as I had a question about the grips that were pictured on the gun. They looked incorrect for the age of the pistol. Hope I didn't make a newbie mistake, but the gun called my name and I was helpless.
Thanks in advance!

1981.
Don't sweat the grips, easy find if you need to change.
Congratz on the K-22!

Grips are earlier than the gun and worth more than the originals.Originals would not have the diamonds.

If those diamond targets don't have chips or cracks, take a hundred off the price of your gun.
Well done.

That's good to know. Guess I'll have to find another gun to fit the grips... and the madness continues.
Hard to tell from the pics, but I assume given the manufacture year that this one has a pinned barrel but non-recessed cylinders? Was hoping it had both of those features.

A 1981 K-22 might have been shipped with standard Magna (service) stocks, or Target stocks with a larger ("speedloader") cutout on the left panel. The ones on it now have the smaller "football" or extractor cutout.
All S & W .22 rimfire revolvers from the 1930s on have recessed chambers. Magnum revolvers had this feature from the Registered Magnum until the early-mid 1980s. Enjoy!

Here's a 17-4 in the 33K8xxx range. '78-'79 mfg gun with the magnas he's talkin' about... (there's a K-38 on top.)
I put target stocks on my shooters, though. You could just leave the diamonds on. Class is never wrong.

Wow, that's great info. Never amazes me the level of combined knowledge on a great forum like this. Thanks. The box has an "ST" written in the stock box. Is that for Target or Magnas?

My 17-4 S/N 31K57xx was shipped June 1979. I would guess yours would be in the early 80's. Since those are the wrong grips, I could get a set of the correct grips to swap you, and I wouldn't even charge you any difference. Ha, Ha. You got a deal with those grips, much nicer than what the originals would have been.
