1979 M-29 /.41 Unfired -Factory Error
Folks:
I have a 1979 Model 29-2 that is new to me.
It is a nickel 4-inch revolver;chambered-bored and marked .41 Magnum.
Unfired. In the original box with all accessories.
It also is accompanied by a 1980 factory letter from Roy Jinks, then Smith and Wesson historian. Letter comments on this Model 29.
It is a factory error in production; but in excellent condition and workmanship from that era.
I have carried Smith and Wesson handguns in harms way since being assigned to the 5th Special Forces Gp (ABN) and MACVSOG in 1970-71-72 ( a 2in M&P) ; and later carried many Smiths as a
Dept of Justice Special Agent and State Dept Inspector.
The action of S&W revolvers is smoother and crisper than
"others"-which is critical in application of the DA feature.
Would appreciate some opinions -and also will find this
revolver a new home.....

WC:
Sure would like to post some pictures. My computer
is the equivalent of an early hand-ejector-unfortunately.
This is a 4 inch bbl Nickel M-29-what I would need is a closeup of the 29-2 under marking;superimposed with the barrel .41 Magnum stamping- in a closeup. Thanks-

Hello and welcome to the forum. Is the gun marked as a 57 over top of the 29-2 marking? Thanks.

If I understand you correctly, you have a Model 57 in .41 Mag marked "29-2"? If that is correct, it is interesting, unusual, but not rare. Someone at the factory grabbed the wrong stamp. Probably a Monday morning gun.
These show up here on the forum periodically, and the general take is that while interesting, there is no increased collector value. So it is worth whatever a model 57 in similar condition is worth.

Last year I ran across a the same thing with a Model 29. It was marked 29-2 in the yoke, but said Highway Patrolman on the barrel. I pointed it out to the people behind the counter at the gun shop, as they had it listed as a 29 in 44 Magnum.

I have a frame marked " 57" that is a 44 mag. It happens. I got the gun at a steal years ago because the local 'experts' infesting the shop convinced everyone that it was less than desirable. Chumps !

fOLKS:
Thanks a lot for the insight. The only yoke marking is 29-2".
Good to know as to approximate value, also. Any comment s or interest appreciated.

Now if somebody comes up with a frame marked "58" with a .44 Spl cylinder and heavy barrel, let me know.
