Default 67-1 Gunshow Find!!

Hey Folks!!

I went over to the local gun show this morning and was headed out the door and almost out to the truck and a man parked next to me and was starting to walk past me with a box tucked under his arm. As I reached for my keys I asked what model his S&W was. He siad it was a model 67. I asked what he would be asking and he said $350 and I asked if I could have a look. He said he had bought the gun new and that he believed it was in the late seventies. He said it had been shot very little by his wife and that was all the action the gun had ever seen. I bought the gun and brought it home. It is a 67-1 with the original box, tool kit, all the paperwork, and is real clean. I am not sure what these go for but I figured in this condition it was probably a safe purchase. Does anyone know what year it was born to confirm the mans claim of being bought in the seventies?
I am not a big fan of the 38's usually, but this is a nice little gun. 4" barrel feels real balanced in my hand. Would this be considered a shooter or a collector? I shoot all my guns but if this should not be fired then I would probably sell it to someone to be a safe queen.
If anyone knows the manufacture date please let me know. Also give me your opinion on shooting it or not.

Thanks
Twig.

B-T: You got a deal on a wonderful handgun. They are everything a Model 66 is except with a .38 Special cylinder instead of a .357 Mag. cylinder. They are usually tack drivers with ammo that it likes. I purchased a frame and barrel only a few years ago (gunsmith special) and slowly accumulated the parts to turn it into a 2.5" barrel, .357 Mag. It has become one of my favorite handguns for plinking and home defense.

Your has been shot, so go ahead and enjoy shooting it. All the aftermarket parts and goodies are available for it to allow you to change it to suit your needs. ............... Big Cholla

You did very well. The stainless version of the model 15 in the shape that one appears to be in is a fantastic find. They were used by many cops and security personnel back in the day. The only things you may need for it are a set of grips that fit your hand or a Tyler T-grip, some speedloaders and a good holster. That is one gun you can trust your life to when the chips are down.

Very nice, here's my 67-1, it's a Dallas/ Ft. Worth D.P.S. marked gun. I got it back in 2001 or so for $250, back when the PD trade ins were around a lot more.

It was my first S&W, that actually belonged to me and I have put lots and lots of .38 through this over the years. It was my only handgun for a while, it was both my shooter and HD gun. It is not pinned, though, if I recall it's a 1986 production. It may have gotten a "duty tune" when in service, the DA pull is like ball bearings on glass. Very accurate. As a fixed-sight revolver fan, I just think of it as a taper barrel 64 with adjustable sights!

You did very well. Ihave thought about a 67 for one of my son-in-laws, who is not a shooter. Would be a good home defense piece for him, with minimal upkeep.

You got a steal. One in that condition with all the goodies would run you around $500.00 here.

Nice Move!!!

I foolishly sold a 67 a year ago to a friend and he won't sell it back.

Very, very accurate firearm. Mine loved 158gr cast SWCs over a standard dose of Unique and a CCI primer.

Great piece, treasured by those who own them.

You will like the Mod 67. I bought one a few years ago and it is a great shooter. The stainless is easy to maintain so shoot it as much as you want. You got a good deal on the revolver. Happy shooting.

Thanks everyone for all the info on this model. Sounds like the man was correct when he said he purchased it in the late seventies. I am glad to hear that owners of the model 67 are happy with their gun. Sounds like it should be an accurate little piece. Cant wait to get it out and try it. It looks like I may have to shoot indoors though as the weather here is going to be getting colder and ****** real soon.

Also glad to hear I didnt spend too much on this!

One question , when I shoot this there will be the powder rings at the front of the cylinder. How do you guys get the front of that cylinder so clean after shooting? I have never been able to get that off and I see picture after picture of guys guns they claim to shoot and the front of the cylinder is spotless. Please clue me in on how to do this.

Thanks ,

Twig.

A lot of people use a lead-off cloth and such. I received a tip from an instructor in S&W Armorer School years ago. he said to use a small amount of Soft Scrub(version w/o bleach) kitchen SS cleaner on a cloth to remove those fouling rings on the cylinder face. Have used it ever since. Works great. Has very fine abrasive that is just enough to remove the fouling but doesn't mark the SS. Don't know if I would use it on a blue gun though. Actually , though, those firing rings really don't hurt anything as long as surface fouling is cleaned off. Shows that the owner actually shoots the thing.
