If there were two identical 29s except one blue and on nickle, which would the marketplace value more? I would assume that there were more blued guns produced. But since blue used to be the preferred finish (and may still be) that blue would hold its value better? What sayeth the experts.

29-2

I'm not an expert, but I am also not a nickel fan. I would take the blue over the nickel every time.

Stainless is a different story for me.

If I had my choice between the 2 guns, and the price was the same, I would choose the blue to shoot, and the nickel to look at. :D
As far as price, a pristine nickel gun sometimes commands a higher price than its blue counterpart.

Its mainly a personal choice.

I've seen outrageous prices raised on auction boards for pristine nickel guns, and blue as well. I think the key is "condition".

Of course, this is just my opinion.

augy :)

Blue vs. Nickel

If we are talking about the behavior of collectors and collectible S&Ws, then nickel typically commands a premium. For example, in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, the sections on the pre-model 29, 29, 29-1, and 29-2 all list some level of premium for nickel guns. The premium ranges from three times the value to "slight premium" for 29-2 guns. I would guess that early 29-2 guns, particularly S-serial number guns, would command a premium... but not sure about later 29-2 guns.

The nickel finished 44 magnum would sell for more.
I like the blue ones...

... but the nickel is tops for the "lookers"!:)

I think overall i prefer blue. But I've been considering having S&W reblue my 19-2, and weighing it against having them do nickel. Not to add value, but just because i think she deserves it.

Given everything in equal condition, the nickel usually will bring the higher price. The difference will be determined by the buyer and what he is really after. I would pay more for a blue if that was the niche I was trying to fill.

If I was buying with the intent to sell I would get a nickel gun, mostly cause a lot of guys around here are like fish... they'll bite at anything shiny! Kinda reminds me of the way we used to trap coons when we was hunting too... they love shiny objects.

I was thinking of getting a nickel 29 just because I have already had a couple blued guns. They do like nice when pristine.

The correct answer would be to buy both, but I am more fond of nickel when it is in good shape
