Other than Hogue and factory target/banana grips what other options are there for wood grips that extend below the grip frame and fill in behind the triger guard? Not to big but room for the little finger to find a grip.

Have some rubber options in "the box of grips" but think this 95% gun deserves some nice wood.

What about ideas for a leather holster for "woods bumming"..... thinking a owb, high ride vertical crossdraw......simi-concealed/protected under a vest or shirt (I have a permit).... might be ideal. Thought about a full flap holster but I'm not into the "Indiana Jones" look. I want full barrel coverage/protection for this 4 inch J frame.

Looking for some ideas and venders. THANKS

If your 34 has a round butt, you could try the grips (Part#411740000) that S&W uses on the model 60 Pro. I believe the grips are manufactured by Altamont; S&W sells them for $42.97 each.

I have sets on 3 J frames, including a pre 34 kit gun; they are my favorite grips for non snubnose Jframes.

I believe forum member Stainz has posted pictures of his Jframes wearing these grips.

The grips extend below the grip frame slightly less than one half inch (9/20). The grips have a semi-squared shape.

If you want good coverage of the revolver without going to a flap holster you might consider a Sourdough Pancake holster from Simply Rugged. It covers everything but the grips and can be worn crossdraw, strongside, or IWB if you purchase the extra straps.

If you want a reasonably priced full flap holster, Ray of Lobo Leather makes one for Jframes. I just received my holster today for my 3" Kit Gun.

You can get handles as shown on the first photo from Herretts.
You can get a T grip adapter as shown on the second photo from Tyler.
You can get a flap holster from El Paso Saddlery.
If you're concerned about looking like Indiana Jones, you can get a bandolier type holster for field use from El Paso Saddlery, as shown in the third photo. As you can see, they make them in any size desired. Worn under a jacket, this holster provides even more protection than a flap model.

Getting any of the above items will take time, and is not recommended for those who have not mastered deferred gratification.

I always liked the smooth S&W J frame target grips.

I didn't realize Herretts was still in business. I've got a couple of their Shooting Star grips still in the boxs. I think; I didn't pay more than $10-15 for them. On their site they list for over $90.

Is this a different company..... or did I learn something new today?

Herretts is alive and well in Twin Falls Idaho, although Steve Herrett is dead. I've ordered custom work from them since the '70s, and have seen no decline in workmanship--although they've told me they've had more trouble getting premium grade walnut.

I'm going with model17, another vote for the smooth factory targets:

Even with big hands the S&W factory J frame Targets work fiine for me. Why stick a large set of grips on these petite revolvers?

To the OP....I have a set of Herretts for a J sq butt...send me $10 to cover postage and gas, and they are yours. They are walnut, 95% shape or better. I will never use them.

Thanks Frank237 but mine is a round butt.

I'm planning to use this to 1. introduce my 11 and 13 year old boys to revolvers (So far just .22 long guns) 2. as a .22 range gun for my wife and 3. as a walking in the woods gun for me.

I don't want anything to big just something that will allow the little finger to find a grip. With a 4 inch barrel I don't think an extra 1/2 inch would make it look unbalanced.

Adding to my possible list is a set of Spegel's "extended Boot Grips" which would add 3/8 to 5/8 inch below the grip frame. His grips (boot and extended) have been standard on my K and L frame Smiths since the mid 80s.

Just one note on the factory targets; they fit BOTH round & square butt J-frames.

In my case, because I wanted a stock which covered the backstrap and prevented the hammer spur from biting the web between my thumb and forefinger. But this illustrates the futility of asking for grip recommendations--everyone has different pyysiological requirements.

You can try grips by Esmeralda . They are a little on the pricey side but made out of the best woods available . I'll be getting a nickle 34-1 this weekend and it'll be wearing a set shortly after I buy it .
