Smith & Wesson 28-2 Highway Patrolman
Hello,
I have an question for all of you. When we lived in SE Texas my Dad was a Deputy Sherriff in Jefferson Co. He bought a Smith & Wesson 28-2, 4" bbl. .357 mag. for his Mom to carry when she took payroll to the bank from the auto repair shop. I was wondering how I could find out who originally bought this weapon, and if was an duty weapon for Texas Law inforcement. The number on the frame is S304 145. The number right below that and in front of the cylinder is 85049.
There is also a letter C over a letter T. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
The S304145 is the serial number from about 1968. The other numbers and letters are assembly marks for the factory and don't mean much now.
You can send to S&W for a factory letter ($50) which will tell you when and where the gun was shipped to from the factory. Most the time it was to some distributor and I don't know if you could ever find out who it was sold to from there.
You said your Dad was a Jefferson Co. Sherriff and I guess it's possible the letter could say it went to the Sherriff's Dept.
I hope you find out something about it and let us know. Good luck.
