I ran across a Model 15 at my gun shop yesterday...15-3 4 " blue...on the left side of the frame near the cylinder latch it is stamped in rather large capitol letters "OCSD." Looks like the department may mave marked them themselves. Anyone know what dept. this is??????

Orange County Sheriff's Department???????

Just looking close to your location it could be Oconee, Oglethorpe (GA), Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Orange or Osceola (FLA) Counties. Just have to check around and see what they were issues.

I was thinking Orange Co. CA because I know they issued the 15 many moons ago..I know I know..along with a million other departments....

I am the Sheriff of Oconee Co, and this agency didn't issue weapons until 1994, and the only guns we have issues (handguns) are Glocks and Kimbers...
Oglethorpe is right next to me, and they have not issued any Smith revolvers either....

Oglethorpe, like Oconee deputies had to buy their own guns for years and years..

letter it and you will know for sure.I had a colt OP marked P.L.C.B and finally found out it was issued to the Pennsylvania liquor control board.

Anybody's guess. Could be (likely) a Sheriff's Department gun, you pick the possible number of counties in the U.S. that begin with the letter "O".

A letter from Jinks might not necessarily tell you anything about who marked the revolver, since it was not marked by the factory. However, a letter will tell who it was shipped to and when. There could be some evidence contained in the letter to suggest what agency with the letters "OCSD" are in that geographic locale.....or maybe not. As we used to say on the job....allot of maybe's.

Cheers;

When I was station at McCoy AFB, in the '60s, it was the Orange County Sheriff's Office. OCSO. It may have changed. FYI. In North Carolina there is a state administrative code the specifically recognizes the Office of the Sheriff as opposed a Sheriff's Department. The Office of the Sheriff is what our state constitution states. Department implies it is a part of the county government, which it is not.

The issued duty weapon of the Orange County Sheriff's Department (CA) was the Model 15. When the department transitioned to automatics the guns were offered for sale to department members. The remaining were given to the distributor for credit.

Index of U.S. counties - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are 73 counties and parishes in the United States which begin with "O". There are 8 Orange counties alone. You could start calling until you find a likely candidate. You will need to ask for an "Old Head" in the dept, the bubblegummer that will probably answer the phone probably wasn't born when the dept. was using revolvers!

I've got a model 15 marked "OCSD". Mine is the heavy barrel version. Is yours heavy or standard?

You must have seen the same one I looked at a couple of weeks ago at Chuck's. I was wondering the same thing about the markings.

OCSD

Perhaps Oldham County Sheriff's Department, LaGrange, KY??? Know some were carrying revolvers until just a few years ago. Mostly older deputies. Don't recall what model, other than they were Smiths.

You can remove Okaloosa County from the list of prospects as well. They never issued a M15.

Now that is a cool and unusual LEO mark!:)

I've got an old Colt Official Police marked "Treasury Department Secret Service."

One of these days I'm going to have to letter that one. It might have a story attached.

Or it might have just guarded a Federal Reserve bank for years. :D
