The 586 is a six or seven shot double action revolver chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It uses S&W's L frame which is a tad larger tan the K frame, it uses a K-Frame sized grip mated to slightly taller frame with a larger diameter cylinder. They have come in several variations with multiple barrel lengths. A dash 1 will be pretty standard 6 shot with a 4" or 6" barrel, red ramp front and a square butt.
If the condition is only fair then $500 would be too much for me, I picked up a fair condition one for $400, if it had been pristine with a box and papers I might have paid $500... probably not though. You should try to talk the price down.
Does it have the "M" modification? If not then that gun is due a free trip back to the factory for some recall work to get a new firing pin and frame bushing. While it's there you can have it run through the custom shop and have any work done on it. When mine went back I had them bead blast it and re-blue it since the finish was a little rough. Had I though a bit longer on it I would have had the front sight milled for interchangeable blades.

The 586...
...is the blued/nickeled version of the L frame (686 Stainless).
The -1 was made until about year-end 1986, when the -2 replaced it.
High quality revolver, and it should last a lifetime. It will handle any .357 Magnum load you want to put through it.
The -1 was included with the no-dash models. They were recalled by S&W for replacement of some hammer-related parts. The revolver will have an "M" overstamped to indicate the revolver was modified by S&W.

I think $500 is too much for a "fair" condition one with no box or papers.
About 18 months ago, I paid $400 for one in excellent condition, with the modification done. I believe that mine is 95% or better, as does my gunsmith/dealer who handled the transaction on my end.

211, I recently purchased my first L frame, a 586 in very good condition W/O box or papers. My high bid was $406.00, so $500.00 may be on the top end of OK. I had it at the range for the first time this week, and as with all my different S&W revolvers it was more accurate than I was, and recoil with any round was very manageable.
As much as I hate to admit this the 586 may replace my M 19-3 as my nightstand go to revolver.
So if you really want the one you are looking at and can afford it, go for it..
