Default It was hard to pass this one up. (Updated 8/16/15 w/Pics)

I am saving up for a commander 1911 for my EDC gun, and I already have two 629s.

But a LGS by me had a nice 29-2, 6.5" barrel, real nice Target Stocks. No Case, no papers.

They want $750 for it.

I had to pass, but I was very, very tempted.

Saving up for a Dan Wesson Commander.

That is a reasonable price. Sometimes you have to have a little self-control. Still.........

I have never seen one in a LGS, been looking a long time for one.
That would have followed me home.

They do better than that out here in CA. I would have grabbed it.

But it shows you have great "gun control" in the proper sense of the word... I'm sure your wife is proud of you. Can't say that's the case with mine. Oh, she has had her moments of "what??? another gun??? what for??? Why do you need all those guns anyway?

No, she understands deep inside herself...I think.

You're a strong man!

I found this one in a pawn shop about 25 years ago for $300
Was like new then and I shoot it just once in awhile. 29-2 with 6.5" barrel.

Will be picking this one up soon : 29-2 from a friend's f-i-l estate. Got this one for $500

This one actually looks better than my 6.5"

Must have been hard to pass on that. I had to do the same thing though earlier this month. Passed on a silhouette 29-3 with the 10-5/8" barrel because it's not the 44 magnum that I wanted. Good work showing some self control. I should try practicing that a little more

<sigh> Had to do the same thing yesterday. A Model 34, with the box...and diamond grips...which have been my weak spot lately.

I didn't even ask them to take it out of the case. I'm too weak.

When you see a gun like that in excellent condition, don't pass it up. It's better than putting your money in the market or savings account. If it is an S pre-fix gun, they routinely bring up to $1200,or more. I view that more as a missed opportunity than an exercise in self control. Just sayin'.

Well, it WAS too hard to pass up, in the end.

The Dan Wesson Commander will have to wait.

I put a down payment on the 29-2 Today.

I have a set of Kuracs that will look amazing on it.

Once I get it in a few weeks, I'll post pics.

Good call! New guns are way easier to find than these nice old guns at good prices. I would have done the same. A 29-2 or earlier is my dream 44 magnum

Good for you! Like bruner said, the older stuff will just get more scarce so you gotta grab some when the opportunity presents.
Please share pics when you get your 29-2 home.

There are four here within 8 miles or so, but I've never seen a 29 in any of them, and rarely any older Smith.

Agree 100% Bobby! With a few pics, a little typing and some luck on gunbroker a guy could probably make $300 on that thing in a week. That's a pretty good rate of return. I don't think that I could even begin to count how many times that I've done that. That's probably part of the reason that I've got a pile of Smiths in the safe. Glad to see that the OP came to his senses.

1911's in Commander length are fairly common, they can be found with little effort... that 29-2 is a lot harder to find.. I'd buy it, keep it & find something else to trade for a Colt Combat Commander in .45ACP.. But the poster knows his needs & wants way better than I do....as the saying goes... it is HIS money.. not mine.

Good call. As already noted, you can always sell and take a profit, but in the meantime you will have a classic Smith to enjoy. Just a few months ago a friend passed away and his wife (who is also a shooter and collector) was liquidating some of his collection. Along with some other stuff was a 4" 29-2, which I could not pass up. Glad I did. It came with about 18 boxes of ammo, mostly 240 gr jacketed soft points, and a bunch of spent brass. I reload, and already had molds, sizers, and reloading dies, primers and several appropriate powders. Couldn't turn the deal down, and even though I don't shoot it that often, I would do the same thing again today.

I like Colts a lot. I have a cool Series 70 that was worked on by a shop I know, and is fun to shoot.

I wouldn't mind a Colt Commander at all, but Dan Wesson has a Bob Tailed Commander that they call a Classic. It is basically an Ed Brown for half the price. But that Commander will wait.

I Picked it up yesterday and took Pics Last Night.

Turns out it was a 6", not 6.5" which is fine with me. It dates from ~1980.

It is VERY clean, looks to be shot very very little.

There is not any bluing loss on the muzzle or any where else.

Here is how it looked when I picked it up.

I also had bought a set of Kuracs a while back that are Roasted Birds Eye Maple.

They look Stunning on this Gun.

And here it is with some other members of the Family:

With my 28-2, also Wearing Kuracs (Royal Walnut)

With my 19-4 Wearing Pink Eucalyptus Kuracs:

With my 629-1 wearing Cocobolo Kuracs:

With my 629 (No Dash) Wearing Keith Browns. Two Uncommon 44 Magnums both wearing amazing handles. Is this a great Pic, or what?

Yes that is a great picture but I like the stocks on your 629, the Cocobolo Kuracs, very, very nice.

I think you got a great deal there OP.

There's a LGS with a 29-2, with box, for $900. It's probably a 95% gun. Also very hard to pass up. I don't buy for profit and Gunbroker is not very encouraging. The only 29-2s with bids are either under $1000 or special engraved models. It would have to be my shooter and the scratch just isn't there...

Gotta agree with that! Never see any good Smiths used for sale in this area. Bob

Tom: beautiful handguns, all!!! Sadly, I let my 629 no dash 4" get away in a trade many years ago. Still have a 4" 29 though with ivory magnas. I like ivory with a blued revolver, but I must say I may be looking at something like you have shared with us for some of my collection. Thanks for the update!

Les, I can't possibly recommend Kurac Stocks from John Culina, or a set of Keith Browns any higher.

John Culina is always making more batches, you just need to let him what you are looking for, and then it's just a matter of waiting for them.

Same with Keith Brown.

Both of them are true gentlemen to work with.

Thanks for the info, Tom, I'll check out both craftsmen soon. Perhaps I should say 'artists', because the results I see here are works of art.
Best wishes, Les
