What is my model 36 worth if I want to sell?

I don't know what year this gun was manufactured, but here are some specs. The bottom of the grip says 334066. It is a .38 SPL, but I guess you probably could tell that. Can you tell me what the real value is and if it is something that is rare, or just a common gun. I'm trying to decide if I should sell it for something else I want. Thank you.

Its a clean older flat latch but since you didnt mention box or docs guessing there are none,
square butt guns are slightly harder to conceal than round and a J frame is a carry gun.

You might find a buyer at $450 but in this economy maybe not, either way you should try.
If I was looking for one I would be happy to get it for $350 , If you have the box and docs another $50 to $100 tops.

I am not in the market for one but if I saw that gun at a show for under $300 I would buy it....then again Im cheap.

All this is just my opinion.
If you get someone that says its worth WAY more see if they would be willing to buy it.

Hello Jjhorrey
I have one that letters to September, 1964, and the serial number is less than 20,000 higher than yours. So I would guess your Model 36 to be dated sometime in 1964.
Yours looks to be in very nice shape. Do those stocks number to the gun?

I think Engine49guy is correct.

Here's my track on the Model 36

Smith & Wesson 36 1-7/8 in Bbl Revolver in .38 Spl. Bluebook of Gun Values (32nd Edition) indicates between $360 in 95% condition and $535 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 62 recorded prices for this model gun from $250 to $600 over a period of 3 Yrs 5 Mos ending May 16, 2011. The average price as of that date was $394. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, round or square butt, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $822.

Here's how the data charts out. Keep in mind the Average Price Trendline is just that, a trend of the average price. Better examples of the model would command higher prices, especially with box, papers, tools, etc.

It is not rare as they made a bunch and it is not a very early "baby chief" that is hard to find and quite desireable.

It is however, a very sweet conditon flat latch Model 36 that someone might want for a collection. It is pre 1968 as it still has diamond stocks and pre 1969 as that is when the "J" prefix guns came out. I would agree with others that your gun is probably summer 1964.

Value is tough since it is not rare but is in exceptional condition. I would agree that you are probably looking at around $400 give or take $50. As all ready stated, box and tools etc. will increace that price.

My best advice is to scan the Model 36's that are for sale on sites like GB and AA and see what other sellers are asking. Then check the recent SOLD listings and see what they really got. Then offer it here in the FOR SALE section as you have the most active S&W buyers/accumulators/collectors all located on one site.:D

Good advice. That's what I do for the tracking. Plus local gunshops and SPF listings on various forums. The 36 is a nice little J.

Model 36

That there is about a $400 dollar revolver in my book. Or at least $350. I bought this one at local gun show recently for $399 and was mighty happy.

Course it had an extremely ugly set of Hogues on it which I promptly tossed and replaced with what it's wearing now.

Wouldn't mind having a 2" version too.
