Three 57s...4, 5 and 6....

Bob...the ramp base/red ramp blade is pinned to the barrel with two pins that are polished flush to the barrel rib. Compare it to the 6-inch nickel Model 57 shipped in January 1965.

Yes, and I can see that the radius of that gun is just like the 64s... Since you have both guns is the radius sharper on the 5" than the 6"....a beautiful gun by the way....

Do you know what year S&W started milling the sight base as part of the slide with a pinned in ramp? I know on 57s S&W started milling the sight blade as part of the ramp in mid to late 1980 as I have an early 1980 4" blue that has the blade pinned to the ramp and a late 1980 that is all one piece...

Thanks...Bob

Bob...For the Model 29, the ramp base was forged with the barrel for 6 1/2-inch revolvers beginning in 1968, but delayed for 4-inch and 8 3/8-inch revolvers until the early 70s; front sight blade pinned to the ramp base with a single pin and polished flush to the ramp base before finishing in bright blue or nickel.

I would guess similar timing may apply to the Model 57 beginning with the 6-inch barrel and being delayed for the 4 and 8 3/8-inch barrel lengths. However, I haven't studied this model nearly as extensively as the Model 29, so I can't say for sure.

The blade and base were forged with the barrel as a single piece for the Model 29 beginning in 1979 took place at the same time as the 6 1/2-inch barrel was dropped for this model. The Model 629s assembled in 1978 and 1979 also have this feature.

Bill,

Thank you for all the information...should you ever want to divest yourself of .41s and stay with your true love of .44s please put me first on your mailing list...

Sigh....Back in my young and stupid days, I bought and then sold a nickled 6-inch Model 57 (1979 vintage). It was the only big-bore revolver I've ever owned, and while I would probably prefer a blued finish now, I sure wouldn't mind having another .41! Beautiful examples here, gentlemen! Doc44, the barrel-cylinder gap on that 57 above looks almost invisible!
