A 28-2 converted to 45 Colt ctg. by John Gallagher.
Hello my fellow Forum friends. Are you keeping warm?
It appears that I have found a nice model 28 converted to 45 Colt ctg.
The work was done by John Gallagher, whom I had not heard of before
researching him from the mention of his name in this auction.
Gallagher Firearms: Home: -
I am quite excited as the work appears done well from the few
good photographs.
It is a model 28-2 with the original cylinder taken out to 45 Colt
retaining the counterbore feature, and having had a 6 1/2 inch
model of 1950 light target barrel installed.
Basically duplicating one of the scarce 1950 Target models originally
chambered in 45 Colt , only with 3 screws instead of 5.
And, of course, the originals were not counterbored.
I will send the $ and copy of my f.f.l. off tomorrow and have the
gun in hand sometime next week.
At that time I will post photos and specifications on the work done

Here's hoping YOUR large caliber dreams come true.
Regards
Allen Frame

Sprefix, I am glad you were not bidding. One of us would have to have
ponied up quite a bit more cash as I was determined to win it.
I am quite pleasantly surprised at the final value.
I won one back in January. The work on this one was not done so well.
The take up is late so the hand will need to be replaced
The chamber throats are a bit large at .455 and the forcing
cone needs to be re-cut and opened up a bit.
But for the final cost on this one, a project is alright by me.
The barrel is a 6 1/2in. 1955 target heavy barrel.
The cylinder is original to the gun.

the grips are perfect and helped offset some of the cost.
I value the original blued washer presentation magnas at about $100.

I'd say you scored big at any rate. We are both lucky I didn't see that auction. LOL I think my top grail gun in Gods' caliber(.45 Longest Coltest) will be a 1917 of sorts, by Hamilton Bowen. I'm on hold for guns, as I'm spitting all over debt-free, and want to get there sooner than later. I've also just purchased an investment-grade wrist watch. Again, Congratulations to you on a fine looking wheel-gun.

Congrats again Allen! Never ceases to amaze me what you come up with. Gotta see your mini collection. Did you see we're coming down to C-Water this fall? I'm riding the Harley and can make it over your way in 4 hours. I'll supply a good Cubano (sp) for us if you supply the refreshments.

Upon close inspection it appears the previous owner filed a notch
there in the sideplate. As if to denote a kill of some sort!

Very nice conversion to a great caliber.
Something similar was in the Classifieds a while back. The starting point was an M520. It got a "new" .45 Colt cylinder, a 5" barrel, and a refinish. The work was done by Hamilton Bowen.
I sure wanted it, but the guy insisted on recouping what he had in it ( $2,500 ! ) which I could not see putting into a conversion. Maybe I should have sold some stuff to finance it, I sure think about it all the time!

There's another one of these on Gunbroker right now. Not much info on who did the conversion though. 6 bids & 5 days left - started at a penny & is now at $380. Wonder how high it will go? I sure would like to have one like this, but my bank is dry right now... John

Oh, my bad, its 45 acp, not 45 lc. Looks like the Keystone Armory has some pretty nice stuff!
You folks back East seem to have a better selection than we find here in the Pacific Northwest. Thankfully, the internet opens many vistas, however lately the State has been collecting tax on out-of-state transactions. FFL transfers have risen accordingly with the added paperwork & shipping fees on top of that add up to a $100 minimum on top of any sales price. Just the burden of the addiction I guess.

John Gallagher is a top-notch revolver smith, specializes in Ruger single actions. Folks on Rugerforum know him well. He's a personal friend and a great guy to deal with. Also builds some really fine lightweight hunting rifles at times. I have several Ruger single actions which he has "worked over" for me. None are for sale.

I'd be interested to see the cylinder from the other end. What's the remaining cylinder wall thickness? Maybe it's just the counter bore that is making it look 'thin' from the trigger end of that beauty! Must say the recessed cylinder is more to my liking and truly a nice job.

Should be the same as that of the factory produced 45 Colt's.
