N. Carolina commemorative s&w

Ok, I need a little guidance from the experts here. Is there any where I can find information on a model 29-2 in .44 magnum. It is a commemorative piece from N. Carolina state highway patrol in a presentation case. It has never been fired and I can not find any information on it. Help!

I've read and I'm not sure if it's true , but 44 mag is rare in this edition. Most were .357. Again there is so little out there on the topic.
 
The first commemorative to feature the Model 29-2 was made for the North Carolina State Police in 1979 and was available to NCSP officers only. The 29-2 has 6 1/2-inch barrel, nickel finish, and smooth, target stocks. The side plate was etched with the seal of the NCSP and an additional NCSP serial number was stamped on the frame. The 29-2 commemorated fifty years of the NCSP, 1929-1979, that was etched on the right side of the barrel. The 29-2 was shipped in a special presentation case.

I have no idea what these guns may sell for, but since they were only offered to NCSP officers, you rarely see them for sale.

I have not heard of a similar commemorative in .357 magnum caliber, but I have not studied guns in that caliber in detail.

One slight correction. North Carolina does not have a "State Police" agency. They have several specialized agencies.

The commerative was for the NC Highway Patrol, and the active troopers were offered the opportunity to buy the Model 29s. I don't recall any of the other details, but saw some the local Troopers purchased at the time.
 
Streichers Police Supply in Greensboro NC had one of these for sale. LNIB with presentation case. They may still have it.

m75rlg...You are correct. I checked the photo I have and the 29-2 is marked NC Highway Patrol.

S&W made the NCHP commemorative using a 29-2 (44 Magnum). It is etched on the right side of the barrel 1929 North Carolina Highway Patrol 1979. They are certainly a scarce variation because they were only offered to NCHP officers. I don't know how many were made.

Commemoratives are in a class by themselves and generally don't appreciate all that much because most collectors are not interested in them.

However, since it is the first commemorative to feature the 44 Magnum, I would offere $1,200 to $1,500 if it was in mint condition in the presentation case.

Just to add to Bill's comments. The NCSP Commemeratives were made in both 6 and 6 1/2 inch barrels. The earliest shipments were in 6 1/2 inch barrels. I believe this was the first commemerative S&W did with acid etched markings and the first nickel 29.

I would agree with Bill's value estimate.

Here she is! Condition was as good as described and at a fair price....to shoot or not to shoot...that is the question.

Old post I know but I would love to buy one of the 50th anniversary pistols . Been hunting around and know they pop up from time to time.
