Model 520 one of 3000 in the House w/ photos
My friendly LGS emailed me today- 'Just had a S&W 520 N frame .357 Mag walk though the door! One of 3000 made for NYSP. You might want to put your other layaway back on my shelf for this one!'
Well, I had to got look at it this evening.
Beautiful, almost perfect except for the obligatory turn line. Nicest 1980's polish and blue I've seen. No box. Marked $895.
I've sold him some nice Rugers in the last month. He says- "I'd like you to give this one a good home. How 'bout $750 out the door"
Darn, one 1963 Ruger Super Blackhawk back on the market, and one S&W 520 waiting for me to bail it out. The wife was with me and I though she was going to drool on the 520 when she felt the trigger let-off. She's partly to blame.
N frame addiction has me in its grasp. Is there a cure?

Sure there's a cure. You fully realize it at your funeral.
Nice score on the 520 by the way.

You will have to wait until I pay her off-which might be a while since I need to pay some $$$ to Uncle Sam by April 17th. My Employer mis-calculated the withholding for my Fed taxes somehow, leaving me in a hole

The 520 was an instant collector's item. Everyone knew they were limited production (3,000) and had not been delivered let alone issued. When the NYSP canceled the order, S&W dumped the 520s on the market and they were snapped up by collectors and investors. I saw my first one in Dayton, OH around 1995. Like almost all of them, it was new in the box (it's very rare to find one that has been fired as they were instant collectibles) priced at $300. Good thing I was pretty broke otherwise I might have bought it and there would be one less pristine and unfired 520 in the world as I shoot all my guns.
If you do shoot it, I'm pretty sure +P 38 Special ammo is OK in it.

Sweet. Nice find. I was fortunate to buy one when they were first released. My favorite dealer (since gone) was close to where I was headquartered and I hung out there often. One day................. !

What a beauty that one is. I love my model 21-4 and 22-4 and their blue frames and fixed sights. To have one in 357 would be great.

There are some of those on gunbroker that look like they have a huge grind mark on the left side opposite the side plate, I assumed that was where a NYSP marking of some kind was ground off. I wondered if they all had that. Yours obviously does not.
Nice gun.

There was no police marking on the 520.
It is also common for the grips, which are serial numbered, to not match the gun they are on. But the grip number does fall in the range of numbers for the guns.

The EXACT reason I ponied up the greenbacks for the 520, as I am lucky enough to have the 21-4 and 22-4 Thunder Ranch guns, also purchased used.
If this one shoots like the newer pair does I won't be able to contain myself!!
