Default 10-6 value question

Saw a 10-6 HB .357 Nickle with box and wrong grips, no tools. Fired but minimally. Nickle appeared excellent even under grips as I showed the chap they were not original.

Been looking for a Nickle Smith for a while and have not been interested in the workhorse Model 10's at all. Well until I finally put one in hand and oh my did that fit well.

So, I think $550 is way too high. What do the experts say?

Thanks

Default Nickel 10-6

I do not believe the 10-6 came out in nickled .357 magnum. I have a 10-6 in .357 and it is a flat blue finish. I would be checking the revolver over for a N stamped somewhere on the gun. Frame ,cylinder, barrel.
As for the price, yes $550.00 is way up there. You said it had the box, what does the box say on the finish? Just a thought. I paid $300 for mine but it is worn...forum members have said it has character.
If the box has a different finish you could bring that up to get the price down. I love the over sized trigger and hammer. Mine has a very short double action as none of my other Smiths have it.

Silver box, N on finish, N on cylinder. SN#'s match from box to gun.

Who knows maybe I was in a hurry and thought it was .357. Swore it was recessed. But I walked into the place out of town and 3 minutes before closing. I'll be back through there today or tomorrow possibly I can double check.

Looking at the book.

There were 10-6's made in Nickle for sure - does not mention .357.

Likewise there were 10-6 Blued .357's made in 1972 for NYSP. It also mentions a sandblasted top strap. This model 10-6 had a sandblasted top strap, but nickle.

The mystery continues.

Serial number was in the D9xxxx? range but don't recall it was 5 or 6 digit. So, either '68 ish or '76 - '77 ish. Guess it could be a special order odd ball Smith 'thing'.

I've seen average condition blued .357 10's sell in the $300-$400 range.

I think an excellent condition nickle gun would be worth at least another $100. Not very common compared to the blued version.

Curious, does it have the .400 wide smooth trigger?

Default I am thinking...

It might be a 38 Spl. I know all 357 magnums are 10-6's, but not all 10-6's are 357 magnum. As far as the model 10's go. Also you did not mention the trigger or hammer as they are over size. That is something you would have noticed right off the bat. Personally I think Smith should have made them two items the standard on the K and L series.
Hopefully we will know shortly.

Well, it was in fact a .38 Special. Still a beauty, but the appeal with non-original beat up grips, no tools and a couple papers is a no go @ $550. He stated he had $450 in it and was not budging. I moved on. Box was nice and had the 12-13-76 date in it and the original $134 or whatever price, IF only!

Sorry for the false alarm. Had it been .357 I would have been tempted under $500.

I paid $225 for my 1967 10-6. Nickel with original grips, numbered to the gun.

That's a heck of a high price for even a nice M10-6, nickel or not.

I'm not sure I would ever sell this M10-6, but if I could get $550 I would be really tempted.

$550 for a model 10? wow...

I guess that's great for the seller if he can get it.

His co-worker clearly thought he overpaid. So he was unwilling to move and was confident he would get his money out of it. We will see next time I'm through there if it is still there. Like I said he had $450 in it and that I might have done if it had the tools and proper grips... I wished him the best of luck on that and cordially went on my way looking at other wares in his store.
