Default Model 27-2 Value

I've just became interested in older S&W revolvers, and I have come across one that has really sparked my interest. It's a model 27-2 in nickel with a 5" barrel. Owner says it looks like it could be unfired. It has the box, papers, and cleaning kit. Could someone give me a ballpark figure on what something like that is worth? Thanks so much for the help!

$650- you stole it
$800- what it's worth
$950- in 10 years you will still have the gun. You will not have the extra $150. Joe

Send me his phone number, I'll see if I can get the price down some Must say that is EXACTLY one I would love to find myself, heck I'll take it a little on the used side even.

I think the pricing shown above is right on if the gun is as new unfired with the box and all the goodies. The 5 inch to me is the best balanced N frame and what's not to love about the 27-2. I have a blued and nickeol version I like them so well. The Nickel one is unfired with all the goodies and would cost someone to offer north of a grand to get it.

Not sure if it's the same gun, but there is one of these on GB right now.

Thanks for the replies guys. The one thing I noticed is the one I'm looking at has a cardboard box and not a presentation box. Don't know if that makes a difference or not. Thanks again for helping a S&W rookie out.

Just in case no one has said it yet, Welcome to the Forum! You could not get a better start with revolvers than a Model 27. Be forewarned though, you won't stop with just one!

The model 27 is sort of the high water mark for S&W revolvers in terms of beauty, and performance being the first magnum. The model 27-2 is such a beautiful revolver that their aquisition can cause a series of events that leaves the mind numb when you wake up and realize you bought six of them in the past 6 months - Make It Stop

27's are addictive. I started with one and now have 5 (there are others on the board with many more than that). My most recent gun is a blue 5" 27-2. Had it at the range this week and it is a sweetheart. You won't regret buying that 5" nickle, but you will regret it if you don't. So as long as the price is reasonable.....

I traded my Model 10 and $200 bucks for my 27-2
I paid $225 for the Model 10, so I am into my 27-2 for $425.

Since I carry the gun daily, I put some comfortable Hogue wood grips on it. I have the target stocks put away.

The Model 27 shipped in cardboard boxes with standard hammer and trigger and Magna grips until 1975 when they upgraded them to all target configuration and wood presentation cases.

Rather than start a new thread thought I'd bump this one. Come across a 27-2 nickel 5 inch with box tools and papers. Emailed the seller who has is listed for $1100 and is pretty firm. Think he might come down to a $1000 but that still seems a bit high IMO. Gun looks 99% and in very good condition. I'd like to pay around $800 but he won't come close to that. Is $1000 a fair price, or a bit on the high side?

Guns like that have escalated in value in the last couple of years. I would not sell my blue one for $1100, if that helps much. Nickel is seen quite a bit less than blue.

I'll disagree with you about the nickel selling for less than blued, Nightowl. I've been collecting different barrel length 27s this year and it's more condition and box/paperwork and tools and such that seem to be the biggest difference in selling price for them. And 5" barrel guns generally sell for higher numbers too. But it's getting hard to find a quality 27-2 or earlier for less than $1000 on GB it seems like. I just gave a little over $1400 for a nickel NIB 4" barrel 27-2, which actually are fairly hard to find (blue or nickel) since they were only made from 1979 to 1981. They had a couple other 4" 27s for sale at the time, but some were 27-3 and the nickel finish on the others showed some wear and milkyness and wear on the blued ones. I rather a recessed cylinder myself as I think they look better.

I read Nightowls response too, and think he meant nickel is seen less than the blued ones.

Maybe so. But any 27-2 in excellent or better shape is selling for a premium nowadays. Who knows where they will be in another 5 years, price-wise?

This thread is nearly 3 years old.

It is interesting to see the values suggested for a LNIB 5" Model 27-2 nearly 3 years ago.

As has been said these guns are escalating in price and it will be the exception to find a bargain at 800-850. This is, by today's standard, a 900 gun if not more. I doubt the seller will come off of their price by more than 100 dollars. Keep in mind there are folks lined up behind you to buy it at 1000 bucks so if he will take a grand and you want it and have the disposable income get it. Good luck.

Prices have easily doubled in three years and in some cases are almost treble. I got lucky just recently and traded into a mid 80's 27-2 in nickel for my HK 9mm and a Berreta 92fs. I valued my guns on the low end at 500 and 400 respectively and think I got the betterend of the trade.

I did not mean to imply that nickel sells for less than blue, on the contrary, with nickel being shipped in fewer numbers than blue, it should be worth more than the blue iterations. Sorry to confuse the issue.

With real nice 28s going for well more tha a grand these days, I'd call that 27 a pretty fair deal!

You really do get a perspective of how the prices are moving so fast through these old threads. Be interesting to see what values are like 3 years from now.

I have never seen a 27 locally. Would like to get one in pretty decent shape. Have never bought off any of the auction sites and don't know what to expect. I usually try to buy guns in the 4 inch or less range. What can I expect in prices? I am not a serious collector but more of a person who likes the older Smiths from the 70's 80's. I won't buy a gun with bluing missing other than maybe some very minor holster wear if that. I don't mind paying a fair price but don't know Whats fair in 27's. I have seen prices on guns that I am more familiar with given on here that seem very Low for my area. I haven't even seen a revolver on local sites in 6-8 months that wasn't a rust bucket. It's like they dried up.

If you are going to shop on GunBroker, you will be looking at prices north of $1K for a 3 1/2 or 4" 27-2 for pistols such as you are describing for condition. I paid a little over $1400 for a nickel 4" 27-2 that is unfired since the 3 factory proof rounds. And that is with a presentation box and paperwork. Without a box or paperwork and with it lightly used but not abused and with nickel or blue in good shape, I would say you could knock off around $200-300 off that price. Now if you want a 4" 27-3 in excellent shape you might be able to get it under a thousand.

I'm still out to collect me a 3 1/2", 6" and 8 3/8" Model 27 over the coming year, finances allowing. For a 3 1/2" 27, I might take one that has some bluing wear if it looks like it is mechanically sound and just get it refinished at Ford's or S&W. The choices on the 3 1/2" guns look to be even pricier than the 4" 27-2 in like new or excellent shape. The 6" and 8 3/8" 27-2 and earlier guns seem to be much more available, but the pricing on them is still pretty stiff.

For a true 99% with box, tools and papers, I would be in that line for $1100.

I don't see any in my area...200 mile radius...when I see one, for less than $1,100.00.

I don't know what yours is worth, BUT...my local dealer has what I believe to be an unfired 3 1/2" Model 27-2, with the box that they have tagged at almost $1800.00.

I haven't looked at it closely, too rich for me, but it does not appear to even have a turn line as best I can tell under glass. I don't know if the box has the papers and tools, but the box looks like old new stock to me.

I think that's a high price, and I think they think it's a high price, but then they only got one of them.

I don't care about box and docs. Not a collector in the sense of buying a gun to throw in the safe etc, I want a gun to shoot but also want a nice looking gun. I know guns can look nice even if shot a lot IF not abused. I carried a 19 for 10 years under a sport coat. Put 50,000 rounds through it. I also used it teaching LE firearms.it looks really good for a gun that's been through that. I always cleaned it and wiped it off after handling but didn't baby it,

I did not look at the thread date until I saw somebody suggesting a LNIB nickel 27-2 was worth $800.

My old 5 inch doesn't have the original grips, a box, or anything else, but more and more, the $350 I paid for it seems to be well worth it.

I have not seen a 27-2 for under $ 950.
I paid $ 1025 for mine late last year.

It's funny the dealer I bought it from told me he was buying them up 4-5 years ago for around $600. He said almost over night good quality Smiths dried up. My guess is these will be close to $2000 4-5 years from now.

Just got my fathers 27-2 out of the safe tonight while looking at other wheel guns. It's slightly used but in very nice shape. No papers. I am astonished at the values these days. Back into the safe it goes for my sons one day. A gift from their grandfather.
