Opinions on value difference between a 10-5 and a 19-3.
I want a 4 inch 19 to go with my 2.5 inch. I have been offered a shooter grade 19 with finish issues in a trade for my pristine 10-5 without box. The 19-3 is mechanically tight but with some stippling. He wants some cash also. Is this a trade I should take?

It's really according to how bad the "stippling" you describe is. I would say not to make the trade without seeing a picture of the 19. If I were trading a truly pristine 10-5 plus cash, I would expect to get a pretty good 19-3 with few finish issues. Also, it's according to how much cash you are talking about.

I agree that you might regret trading your pristine 10-5. I don't blame you at all for wanting a 4" 19, but there still quite a few out there that you can get without giving up anything.

I've found that when I trade one gun for another I end up to some extent wanting the one I just had back. As far as this trade, a pristine 10-5 for a 19 with finish issues, I would AT THE LEAST trade straight across with no cash. There are plenty of good 19s out there still at good prices and I think this guy might be trying to take you for a bit of a ride.

I wouldn't make the trade. Model 10's are pretty common. Pristine ones aren't. Shooter grade Model 19's sure aren't rare.
Keep looking.

It's my observation that even "pristine" model 10's can be found, especially 10-5 and 10-6's. A model 19 of any condition as long as it is mechanically sound is worth more than pretty much any model 10. Around here, shooter grade 19's go for $400+, model 10's, even in great shape go for less.
In the end, it depends on how bad you want it.

As had been said before, M10's are quite common, but "pristine" ones are not seen often. A shooter grade M19 can be found locally, but it will take some looking. I would not make the trade and add cash. Keep the M10, save a little and buy a M19-3 or -4. Pristine Smiths in any model are hard to find.
